Exclamation Advice: CLS vs. S-class 2006

Need advice to give to my father.

He's an old fashioned guy with a W140 S500 he loves it cause of the interior room as he doesn't drive himself, he's always chauffered around.

Needs to change the car now so he's hesitating between CLS500 or new 2006 S500. How does interior space compare between the 2 models? also options for rear seated paasengers?

Would you be rather flown in a G-V or in a Citation 500 ?

Cls is only designed for 4 seaters.
S class is for 5 seaters.

The S-class is the way to go. The S-class is roomier, more comfortable, more standard features, and just feels better. I'm gonna get ***** for this, but to me, the CLS feels like a big C-class and overpriced. Tell dad to go for the S-class (or the CL)

The CLS is built on the E class platform and doesnt share any components with the C class.

If you're going to be in the back seat most of the time, it's no contest. Get the S. The CLS is just too cramped (even for me, and I'm not anywhere near 6ft tall) in the back.

2001 Lorinser Edition CL600 (SOLD)
This is exactly what I needed to hear about the CLS. It's a very trendy, hip, sleek design, in its own corner, and many will take to exactly that over the new S-class, but still in no way will it even come close in sharing the same slot as far as prestige, technology, comfort, and "upper-classness" power-look snob appeal of the S, ESPECIALLY for someone who is chauffered; I think it would look silly to have someone chauffered in a CLS - unless it was stretched! If you want to sleek up the look of the S-class, put a tasteful bodykit like Lorinser! That'll give the CLS a run for the money - unless it also has one!

And - another little thing which is huge in my book - the CLS does not have the pneumatic door and trunk closing which I MUST have for a luxury sedan!!!

No brainer. S over the CLS. Apples to Oranges. The only problem I see with the new S is the high tech stuff that could drive some of the non techie folks away from MB like what has happened with some former Bimmer buyers with their PITA i-Drive. But who cares if you can be chaffeured? Why not a Maybach?

S Class

Tell your Dad to find a newer W140. If he has been used to the LWB version of the S500 even the new W221 will seem smaller by comparison and the CLS well..... don`t make me laugh it would be like looking out of letter box from the back seat and forget the acres of head room he`s used to.

So upgrade to W140 S600L which will also be far more exclusive than the thousands of W221s about to appear everywhere in the US and save himself a packet as well. Incidentally a 98/99 S600 will have virtually every gizmo that the new cars have and he can always buy his chauffeur a set of night vision goggles to make up for the one omission!

Seriously...... whilst the above isn`t entirely off the wall your Dad should stick with the W221. On the otherhand, if he went with the W140 600L option he could have that and a CLS for less money and give himself and his chauffeur a choice of rides.

New S500 or Maseratti Quattroporte.

CLS has very limited rear room (I'm 5'11" and could barely fit comfortably)

Since he is being chauffered, the S-class is the logical choice

Dude, it's easy the S is definitely better for your dad. There really is no point in asking.

Hey SSL,

its weird, but if you see the car of choice among the presidents of many Countries, they are still using the W140, of course in armored version.
Even in NYC, where I see a lot of Diplomat cars running around UN, many are still using W140s, and I've seen less W220s.

So, HGabr, why dont you ask your dad to get an armored S600. It would be quite exclusive, and with the difference, ask him to just give it to you...

CLS-v-S Class

timoc,

You are absolutely right. W140 is still the Crowned King of motordom but the W221 looks like it will be a worthy heir.
