S Class Double Glazing

This may sound weird, but I had no idea that my W221 had double glazing. I only noticed it when I thought I saw a "chip" on the top of my drivers side window. It wasnt a chip, but actually some sort of soft substance that seals the two sheets of glass. Somehow it has been pushed down further in.

Let me know if I am wrong, but I am certain its double glazing. I havent bothered checking the manual.

I have owned W140, W220 and W221. If you want to see and know what double glazed side windows actually look like I suggest, as would anyone else who has owned the above three consecutive S class cars, that you check out the glass on a W140.

I've seen the double glazing on the older S class ( the one before the last model ). It was edged with a black strip. I just thought they did away with it on the new one. My CLS 500 almost certainly didnt have it, and the glass on the w221 looks quite thin.

Yes...the windows are laminated glass and have a PPG product called Sungate between the laminations. The filter is an IR/UV film which block those rays and reduces cooling requirements. The new windows are thinner than older car windows. The double glass also helps reduce noise levels in the car.

Thanks Jack, I was really surprised when I noticed the 2 panes of glass. I was sure they had done away with it.

I notice, that this car has the best airconditioning I've ever experienced. Florida, as you know is hot and humid, and all my other cars just dont cut it, when it comes to consistency for inside temp. This is something I always notice everytime I drive. I wonder if the 7 series is double glazed?

I agree on the A/C. Not only here in the dry desert but I took it on a trip to SC and MS and it handled the humidity there fine. As you say, it is a nice constant temp and the ducts have been so well placed and the flow controls using COMAND work well also.

Yo Jack, hope you don't think I am being picky but I think most people would consider laminated glass not to be 'double glazing' per se.

The W140 was truly, as then current publicity material proudly pointed out, double glazed, with a a layer of air sealed between two layers of glass. When I took delivery of my car I was suitably impressed!

When the W220 was released, publicity material claimed that advances in technology meant the same insulative qualities could be achieved without the extra weight and expense of double glazing.

By the way, my wife would be the first to agree with you about the airconditioning, but I feel that the superior heat UV/IR protection (Sungate!) contributes vastly in keeping the interior cool and making the climate controls job easier.

It seems as though Mercedes really listened to all the complaints about the W220, thought of the W140 and really sweated the details to no end. I would agree too that the glass and likely improved specification in who they're buying A/C units from combine to produce the superior effects you all speak of. I've been in MB's that struggled with really hot weather, but if you guys in Nevada in other hot places are pleased then MB has done right.

Tinted laminated all around glass

Tinted laminated all around glass is optional here in Iran. If you order night assist the main windshield is laminated so I had to order the all around package. I wonder if the lamination technique is the same as MAYBACH which have 4 layers of special film in the laminate. My question is with this kind of sound/heat lamination is the AC strong enough to cool the back seats on a long wheelbase? or its necessary to get the rear AC controls? I have order a black (obsidian) on black. Your comments would be appreciated. (Is the rear AC control just control or extra AC power?)

Thanks

Habib

The windshield is different compared to other MBZ's I've gotten the windshield damaged. On my W221's the laminate seems to be very soft and flexible but on the others it seems to be very hard. Even when it hit the sound was different. These pictures attached were just from a stone flying from a truck in front of me and look at the the laminate peeling.

I had a hard hit about two weeks ago but could not find anything on the windshield. However, I was cleaning the windows and now notice a small size hit down in the black area just above where the wiper is. The "hole" is about an 1/8th of an inch and there is a spatter area of maybe i/2 inch and a slight crack line of about an inch going upward. I guess I will contact my insurance company about it...whether they can do that repair thing or have to replace the entire windshield I don't know. I hate to have a glass company break the seal on that windshield? Did you check with anyone yet on fixing it?

I'm really scared to break the seal also. I guess due to the fact that many installers don't pay carefull attention to detail and may make scratches here and there. Even though it's ugly, I'll to live with it until I do find an installer that I'm comfortable with but no I have not gone out to see my options but regardless it needs to be factory glass. Post the details if you do get yours fixed.

Here are two shots of mine...much less of a problem than yours unless that crack starts to creep. I trust my SA so I may call him and see who they use and it definitely has to be factory glass replacement. I am not in a rush and not anxious to get it fixed...will take care of it when the urge strikes...

Jack,

Bulletin S-B-67.00/20 AUG06 Damage to laminated glass due to chips or cracks (all models). NOVUS glass repair is approved by DCAG and recommended by MBUSA for use in repairs. Cracks up to six inches in length that radiate from the impact point are repairable. The impact spot from the initial damage will remain visible after successful repair. However, NOVUS uses a special polish to restore the shine to the repair, thus reducing visibility of the repair.

Most insurance companies allow for repair first and if not satisfied permit replacement thereafter. Depending on your coverage I would suggest getting a quote from your dealer and if repair and/or replacement are not covered with no out of pocket contact a NOVUS franchise directly.

DAn...you are truly the answer man! Thanks...I will contact my insurance and see where they stand on repair. Based on the location I would not have a problem with repair at all. Thanks again.

I know it may sound stupid, but don't try using your wipers for a while. I've actually seen people to it before with broken bits of glass screeching all over the windshield.

Get that fixed asap because it will grow.

Another plus is that Laminated glass is also good because it stays in one piece if the airbag comes into contact with it, rather than shattering into a million pieces.
