That is a great MPG statistic especially given the duration of the reading (5k+ miles). There is no way the LS460L does much better than that.

but seriously, i think it just comes down to the customer demographic. i think more car enthusiasts buy Mercedes and other German makes while people buy the LS460 because it is practical etc etc. Because it is a great car, just not that exciting, so it makes sense that those type of customers aren't going to be scouring the country for their "dream" LS

Lexus dealers aren't allowed to charge more but they can offer overpriced add-ons.

Well that and the car just came out like 10 or so days ago. The dealers around here have maybe 1 or 2 or them on their lots at this point.

They are not on E-bay b/c unlike greedy companies, Lexus has a strict policy when it comes to selling to the highest bidder and other questionable tactics like selling over sticker price.

E-bay also means many times cars you can't sell. Hence it being "E-bay".
If the car is in demand, you won't even have to advertise.

Clearly it works, being the most reliable and best selling luxury brand in America for the 7th year in a row....

1SICKLEX, That is simply not true. I remember seeing S550's on E-Bay the day they came out since they were in such high demand, and many dealers became very very lucky when they sold them over sticker.

That's because we've got people from Glauser and Dick Dyers that have like a whole page full of eBay ads.

One...if Lexus dealers are not selling on eBay then they will eventually to stay current with the sales trend of doing business on the web.

Two..."luxury" cars are in the eyes of the beholder and just because Lexus, JD Powers and some government agencies classify it as such, it is not a "luxury" automobile in the eyes of many.

Three...Lexus may be the largest selling "luxury car" in America, but the S Class is the largest selling "luxury automobile" in the world.

Sorry if this is a repost but it is entertaining. If Lexus had this prob I'd hate to see what happens with the MB version of park assist.

I agree with you; I just went to the Toyota and Lexus websites and compared the photos with those posted in this thread. No question in my mind that the Camry is very similar in its overall look to the LS460i. The LS is a longer, larger vehicle of course, but the family resemblance is there. Both Toyota and Lexus build quality vehicles, so anyone who buys one can't go wrong from a luxury or build quality standpoint.

But for me, the 'passion' of the automobile just isn't there. When it comes to automobiles, everything is so objective that there really isn't a 'who's wrong' or 'who's right' because everyone looks for and looks at something just a little differently. Going all the way back to when I was in high school, I knew that someday I would own a Mercedes, because the lust, the desire was there. I can't say that Toyota or Lexus has ever built a vehicle that I desired, or lusted after... and that's okay, because there are plenty of other people who must, since they buy them. It's kind of funny: no matter what brand or model vehicle people buy, have you ever noticed that when it's brand-new, after locking it and walking away, they look back at it?

Hopefully, someday I hope that I'll lock and walk away from a S-Class, and get to look back at my baby, reaffirming my buying decision. But for me, I know that it will never be looking back at a Lexus...

If we stick with US definitions, and we might as well since that's where we both live, then not just JD Power, but also Edmunds, KBB, CG (which uses the vaguer phrase "premium"), and all five major magazines would likely say that any car from the following makes (excluding exotics) are luxury cars, by virtue of their price, feature content, and interior ambience:

Acura (poss. excluding TSX)
Audi (poss. excluding A3)
BMW
Cadillac
Infiniti
Jaguar
Lexus
Lincoln
Mercedes-Benz
Porsche (okay, they're sports cars, but still...)
Saab (poss. excluding the now-defunct 9-2X)
Volvo (poss. excluding S40)
Volkswagen Phaeton

If all of those sources agree, then that's a pretty good consensus from the people who would know, right? In the face of that, some people saying that Lexus doesn't make luxury cars is like the crowd who says that a Porsche Cayman isn't a sports car because it has a roof. Definitions drift.

I know that the M-B sales press releases say this. However, to accept that, you would have to say that the E-Class, for example, isn't a luxury car. It's got higher sales than the S-Class (262,000 vs 50,000). In Germany, such vehicles might be classed as "compact executive cars" (C-Class) or "executive cars" (E-Class), but nobody uses such terms in the States. Here, M-B calls even the C-Class a luxury car. It is true, though, that the S-Class outsells the LS globally, although not in the States.

So, if the C- and E- are luxury vehicles, so are cars like the Lexus GS or LS. You could say that the LS isn't a "top-flight" competitor in the 7-Series/XJ/S-Class group, which I would dispute, but could understand. But to say that Lexus doesn't make luxury cars at all is a stretch of logic, in the face of the professional consensus. If that's not what you meant to imply, though, I apologise.

You missed my point...I should have perhaps had quotes on the words "car" and "automobile." The Lexus is a "car"...the Mercedes Benz is an "automobile." Simple as that...

Wow, I'm a little surprised at the reactions (after reading this long, long, long, entire thread).

Well from the review of the LS, it seemed like there's nothing good about the car, which of course is somewhat unimaginable -- MB Fanatic -- you must have admired a couple of other things about the car. I mean, granted Mercedes Benz can be the best hotel in the world, but doesn't mean other hotels don't offer one of two amenities that Mercedes doesn’t, maybe a different layout for it’s pool. And while I know you were giving your honest review – there are 2 things that strike me – the first is you went into the test drive chuckling at the new Lexus, and the second is that you drove your CLS55 – an AMG Sports Sedan! – to then get into a luxury sedan. Come’on, the Lexus never had a chance!

Now before you and Nevada bash me - don't get me wrong, I think the S-Class is better and discarding money as an issue, most people would take the S-Class (at least I would). But the S-Class will always be the S-Class, Mercedes-Benz is one of the most popular brands in the planet, and it's flag-ship will always capture the hearts of many; some people know they'll buy it before the design is released, it's standard, it’s routine. Someone here said they don't see many S-Classes (and in turn see many LS’s), I don't know where you live but in New York City they're all over the place! And they're beautiful!

Now with all that praise for Mercedes and particularly the S-Class being said, it takes manufactures like Lexus to continuously evolve automobiles and to challenge manufactures like Mercedes and BMW to produce brilliant cars. Believe it or not, Mercedes engineers stay up long nights trying to make sure the S-Class remains on top from legit competitors like the LS. I mean think about it when the LS debut over a decade ago, it really challenged both Mercedes and BMW, in fact, Mercedes incorporated some of Lexus’ designs – for instance the illuminated tachometer. But let’s stick to the point of the thread, which centers around the new LS – when we don’t compare it to the S-Class, let’s say compared to the Infiniti Q I’m sure it’s a wonderful car. Even if we compare it to the Jaguar XJ it measures up well. So perhaps it’s not as bad as it first seemed. For my own judgment, while to everyone – their own, I think the LS is bound to be a great car. I mean, it’s only gotten better and better, which means since it was first introduced it’s become more and more refined. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s better than a 7-Series (even with BMW’s controversial design) or the S-Class, but I’d say it’s another option for that class of buyers. And it hold it’s own market – it’s niche market, and as time passes and it continues to distinguish itself from Toyota, it’ll begin gaining the reputation of Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover and others.

All in all, German engineering is great (especially in the performance aspect), it’s produced some of the greatest cars. But I think Lexus are really on to something – considering they win J.D. Power Awards so often must mean something – and if not, consider their successful sales record – it must mean some people obviously like them. But then again, that’s what makes the world unique – because it’d be dreadfully boring if the world was filled with just BMW’s and Mercedes (as great as they are).

All the Japanese makes are poor in braking. The latest Road & Track shows the LS stopping a full car length longer than the S from 60 and two car lengths longer from 80. That is the difference between an accident and no accident. Pathetic IMHO. I value brakes even more than power (and way more than "self-parking").

Another thing that bothers me....I saw a LS 460L in front of me at a stoplight and I noticed something interesting about the exhaust. I had always thought the chrome pieces in the bumper were exhaust tips that they integrated into the bumper, but I was wrong. They are just outlines in the bumper, the real tailpipe ends before that and looks the same as an escort! Not a good job integrating the exhuast into the back of the car. From the composite photos I couldn't tell and when I went to the Lex dealership I didn't even look that low on the back of the car. A car at that price should have a nice exhaust on the back of the car, hell a c280K has a nicer looking exhuast

I have not driven the LS 460, but just from my encounter at gas station, if feels like " I see dead people....." It's eerie silent, the driver just start the car and roll silently off the gas station. I dont think LS 600(Hybrid)? is out yet right?

Personal opinion:

1. 460 looks significantly better than any of the previous LS; and now, it finally has the look of "flagship" of Lexies.

2. NO SOUL/ PERSONALITY at all! You start a V8 with 380 houses under the hood and dead silence......Blah

3. On the other hands, many people will love its dead silent characteristic.
