Tow Away Alarm

So I was reading the manual today and found out that only cars produced after a certain date had tow away alarm. And my car is one of those that didn't have it! Or at least I don't think it does, because there is no settings for it on my COMAND.

Does your car have it? I find it funny how they'd produce cars without tow away alarm, seeing how even my 06 S350 has it.

Is this something that can be retrofitted?

My '01 S55 AMG had the tow away alarm but my '06 CLS55 AMG does not have it.

It's a good feature to have.. I don't see why they wouldn't make all of the S classes with it. Doesn't make sense to put it on some of them and not on the rest.

Exactly, and the thing is, they've had it even on the 06 W220s. But why is it for W221s, only some produced after a certain date has it?

BTW Chucky, when was your car manufactured? Mine says 01/2007 and I don't have the tow away on/off selection on COMAND (which means my car doesn't come with it).

Check the black sticker on the lower end of the B-pillar with the driver's side door open.

My car, which is March 07 production, does not have this feature either. So it may be that feature was available on cars before a certain date.

That's not the only feature which I don't have which earlier MY2007 production cars did have.

That sucks for us with later production vehicle. Any idea why they would remove this feature?!

eddietr, what else don't you have?

Well, they also removed two adjustments from the multicontour seats some time before 03/07: the thigh adjustment and the overall seat firmness.

I can't remember right now the other feature that was dropped "depending on production date."

Oh, I remember now. I do not have rear adjustable lumbar support as part of the rear seat package. That used to be part of the package.

And I also don't have an umbrella holder on the inside of the trunk lid.

And I'm pretty sure I don't have the rear shade control on the headliner near the sunroof, next to the interior light control. I'll have to check that again tomorrow.

Oh wait, never mind on the shade control. That's for the rear panorama shade, not the rear window shade. So of course I don't have that, since I don't have the pano roof.

So it's just the 2 multicontour adjustments, the umbrella holder, and the rear lumbar that I'm missing compared to earlier cars.

I read about the umbrella holder in the manual but don't actually remember seeing it either. Let me take a look later.

How many people remember to disable it on a ferry, where the normal ship movements can trigger the alarm? I imagine they had quite a few false alarms in places like Seattle, where many people commute via ferries. And if you don't get to it in 30 seconds (people on big ferries are usually three decks away by the time it goes off), it reports the car stolen via Tele-Aid.

Crooks are smart enough to disable it. Between ferries and the no-parking-zone tow trucks, I bet they had more false alarms than real ones. That would be the cost they were trying to contain, not the parts cost.

The rear lumbar support was never part of the rear seat package. This is only on V12s and it is standard. This was an error in the MBUSA information.

Our car is exactly 1 year old... so I'm assuming it was built around Feb. 06? I believe we have the tow away alarm feature in the COMAND. So, maybe they deleted it on the newer ones.

I did notice the newer models don't have the sirius on the trunk deck. I think they integrated it into the fin on the roof. Couldn't they have thought of this a few months sooner? lol.

That's what someone else told me once. But then someone on this board reported that he did have the rear lumbar on a designo 550 with the rear seat package. I'm trying to remember who.

Yes, there was that progression from the second fin to the more normal sat radio antenna to no antenna on the trunk. I always thought it was a wiring issue. I thought the wiring for sirius was an afterthought (since they don't have that in Europe), and then it was some time before the factory bothered to integrate it in better.

I am happy about that change.

Yeah, I'm glad they changed it on the newer ones. Fortunately, I'm used to seeing trunklid antenna, so it doesn't bother me.

But, we do have the 2 extra multicontour adjustments and the umbrella holder. hehe. Typical Mercedes de-contenting. Our last S600 had wood trim where there is now plastic trim in the headliner, such as the grab handles etc. When we got this car, it was listed on MBUSA that the 600 has wood trim handles, but it didn't and they updated the website shortly after. I gave up on trying to get it.
