Gassing up the S550

Has anybody ever had a problem with filling the fuel tank in their S550? Mine seems to build up pressure, most usually kicking the pump off. Today, it built up enough pressure to backwash a bunch of fuel back out of the tank. It was only about 1/2 full when this happened. Please post any experiences or comments.

Mine gasses up as any other normal car would. Never had any issues.

It's kind of bizarre. I have to use a very slow flow rate to successfully fill it.

Get it checked out by the dealer since I assume you're under warranty.

Mine did that also at 3/4 tank, I assumed it was full and noticed it after I left the station. Maybe you can slow down the pumping and let the air flow equally with the fuel.

This type of stuff should not be happening to a car of this caliber.

Could it have been a problem with the pump itself?

Did you confirm that by going to a different gas station?

The pressure buildup and cutting off happens at every station and it only seems to be getting worse. A dealer visit is in order. I have list of a few other minor things I want them to check out as well. But I agree completely with usctrojans1 this should not happen on this type of car. Maybe it might be acceptable on a 1985 Chevrolet It might be a couple weeks before I have them come pick it up, but I will be sure to post a followup as to what they find.

I've heard of this problem before, but not on a MB. At that time their was a relief valve on the gas tank that had not been uncapped at installation time. Dealer should be able to see this and correct the problem.

Started happening to me past 45 days at 5 different stations. I must hand control the flow to slow; it still shuts off; very irritating and time consuming. Plan to have it looked at during the upcominig Class B maintenance check.

Check the forum, it's a known fault that can be fixed.

My 07 S550 did it so bad finally I couldnt get any gas into the tank.. I took it to the dealer and they replaced a charcoal canister, some filter and some mich. gaskets etc..$900.00 was the bill. I went ballistic.. finally MB ate the parts and I paid the $230.00 Labor... no more problems..

I have seen this happen on my E350. Didn't pay particular attention since it happens once in a while but seeing this thread, will keep a close eye on it.

Couldn't find the thread that Armadillo888 pointed out, though,

Hi, I was trying to find the thread, found this one, which is not very helpful though

Anyway, your dealer should fix it (ideally MB will pay the parts, you the labour)

I think this is an 07 issue. Mine started with this problem around 22k miles and got worse finally took it in and dealer fixed it under warranty. Dont remember exactly what they did but even after, the car would never fuel up completely without finessing the pump near 21 gallons.

I've only had my car a few days (it's an 08 so just new to me) and I've tried putting gas in 4 times and have had this problem every single time. I get fed up and stop at about 1/2 tank because it's so frustrating. I'm still under warranty so would the dealer pay for parts and labor to fix this, assuming they'll even do anything about it? It's not really something I can replicate at the dealership.

Also, I'm in California and the car came from Louisiana, anyone know if maybe they use different pumps by state and that could be my issue?

Go to dealer right away, especially if they sold it to you...either way, no need to demonstrate the problem, its a common, known issue with clear fix...mine was fixed 100% under warranty.

Thanks for that, I went to the dealership today and the first guy who greeted me seemed clueless but then he went and talked to someone who knew about it. Apparently there's a charcoal canister that needs to be replaced. They ordered it up and it'll be changed out in a few days all under warranty!

warranty

my parents have a 2007 S550 that is having the same problems.
they are out of the bumper to bumper warranty.
I assume the emissions warranty is longer, if it is would that be covered under that warranty
