Telephone display disappeared from instrument cluster
Hi guys - I'm a two week owner of an 07 S550. When I first bought the car, the instrument cluster display options across the bottom of the speedo had the Telephone option listed along with Trip, Audio, Navi, Assistance, etc. I noticed a few days ago, the Telephone option is no longer there. Anyone ever see this before? The car does have bluetooth and it works fine using COMAND and the keypad.
I'll have it checked at the dealer at the same time I get the 08 COMAND update, but just wondering if anyone has seen this before. Also, the sound system does not lower volume when the Nav system makes an announcement, so if the volume is turned up, you cannot hear what she is saying. Is there a way to change how much the volume of music lowers when announcements are made? I remember being able to set this in my 05 S500, but have not found anything in the manual so far. I have a copy of the DTB for the COMAND update and noticed this lack of muting/lowering volume is one symptom they list for getting the update, so I guess that is good ammunition for getting the update.
Anyway, great car and I am really enjoying it so far. One minor hiccup so far - I bought the car about 100 miles away and had to take it back yesterday as the dealer owed me a trim ring around one foglight and dent removal for a single small ding. On the way there, the check engine light came on. They scanned the computer and replaced a "cam magnet" or something to that effect. Said it had something to do with timing. I found it a bit odd to need a part such as this at 30,000 miles, but things happen. Glad I have 4 years and 70,000 miles more of warranty.
Glad to be a W221 owner and to be part of this forum. Looking forward to sharing information over the years to come. I'm heading out to hadwire my Valentine.

Looks like the OP has not visited the site since posting the question. The fact that he lost the phone menu sounds really odd, would be interesting if he would explain what happened, if the cluster had been incorrectly coded at some service etc.

Sorry I haven't posted back. I was hoping to have it solved by now, but the car will be going in this Friday to have the COMAND software updated and the missing Telephone option looked at.
The only thing that has been done to the car since I have had it is the aforementioned magnet replacement and resetting of the check engne light. I do not remember if the option disappeared before or after. I had similar programming issues with my 05 S500 that were easily corrected by re-flashing the instrument cluster, so I feel this will be the same.
I will post again with the results of the service visit.
Thanks for the info on the bulletin, but the one I have is newer than the one linked above. I will take it to the SA to be sure they know what to do. I got lucky with the audio not lowering as I now have a valid complaint to get the update. The selling dealer wanted to charge $200 for the update with no symptoms. When I originally inquired, I had not noticed the lack of volume lowering to complain about.

Perhaps some coding was missing when the phone system was installed this way?

If I remember right, he did not have the phone system installed from the factory but it was only installed afterwards at a local dealer at Nevada, not by the dealer who sold the car (wasn't that Denver).

UPDATE - The car spent the day at the dealer and after re-flashing the instrument cluster with the latest software, the telephone option is still not there. They are sending a request to MB for assistance and will have me bring the car back when they have additional guidance.
They did install the COMAND update, so I now have bird's eye view, traffic updates and DVD video option. I haven't had much time to play with it, but I like what I've seen so far. The color scheme seems to have been updated as well and it looks nice.
Will have to wait and see what comes out of the request to MB, but I will update once I know something.

Flashing a new SW as such should not change the features. The cluster is coded (accidentally or not) for no phone menu and the SW update does not change this.
Have you checked your data card, does it have the phone option? Do you know if the workshop performed SCN-coding after the SW update or did they store the current configuration and restored it after SW flashing? If the phone option code is missing from your data card, then SCN coding the cluster would make the phone menu disappear.

Found something interesting. On the window sticker, it shows hands free communication system with voice control. Nowhere else does it mention anything about a phone.
I also received a printout of the details of the car, which I assume is the data card mentioned. On this one, it has option 077 - Ship without phone listed. So it appears to me the phone was added later. I guess this may have something to do with it.

Ask them to have the data card updated. There are several options, it be possible even on-line with Star, at the retrofit path add the phone option code and update.
Once the data card is OK, have the cluster SCN-coded. I did not check if the phone menu could be ticked on "manually, the old style", I assume not.

Thanks for the info Diesel. I'll mention this when I take it back. Luckily my SA does not get upset when I show up with knowledge that may assist them - I took the DTB for the COMAND update and he highlighted the volume not lowering symptom and stapled it to the work order.
Speaking of volume, I forgot to mention that the update DID NOT correct the volume lowering issue. In addition to asking for help with the telephone option, he is asking about this as well. He feels confident they are going to suggest replacing an audio module to fix this problem. It's not a big deal as I don't use route guidance very often, but I do want things working as they were designed.
