S-Class (W221) 2007-2013: S 320 CDI, S 350, S 450, S 500, S 550, S 420 CDI, S 600

Honestly.. did you buy your S for status or love?

W126/W140 are even cheaper, but it doesn't mean that they carry the same status as a brand-new W221. Though whatever you save on the purchase price, you lose in repairs.

Plus, the ride, features, and handling I like much better than the RR.

Status isn't an issue. With the money I have invested in my restored '67 Vette, I could have bought something flashy like a Ferrari or Lambo. I just wanted a big safe car for my family.

It's not exactly the truth about W221. You can buy very well loaded S550 for no more than $50k today. $45K savings - it's alot of repairs ))

Very true. Is this status or vanity at a high cost? After purchasing my first MB, I traded it in, for my second one, at 95% of what I originally paid for it.
Today, I can get approximately 53% of the cost I paid for my 2007 S550, if I wish to buy a new one, ... with questionable tail lights .)
In my opinion the Uber "S" lost class and status when it started to produce massively to satisfy the modern MB bean counters.
Time for another VSOP.

Those were the days of high resale values, propped up by limited quantities and high demand. I remember reading an ad stating the 3 year resale of 86% for a 450SEL.

It's still true that even a $50K S550 would appear more prestigious than a $5k W140 ;-)

Do you suppose it could've been inflation that caused such a high trade-in value? Personally, I won't be surprised if something similar starts happening for 2010-2011 models. The dollar is significantly weaker than the euro, and them German folks have a profit to turn.

I don't think the problem with depreciation has much to do with mass production. For instance, look at Maybach; with rather limited annual production, the depreciation is still through the roof. I think the deal is that we have many more wealthy people than we used to. When you can afford an S-Class, you would probably much rather buy a brand new car, which means that the used cars will most likely be picked up by bargain-seekers (whether those can actually afford the car or not is a different question). When considering a $100k+ car, I would personally try to always go for the latest and greatest; after all, I'm buying the car to enjoy it rather than to boast the sticker or worry about inevitable depreciation.

You read my mind. My lease expires in 5 months and i don't wanna lease anymore in this market. I see the point to buy 2 years old S550 and keep it for 4-5 years. I think resale value after 5 years will be still high because of high lease prices and weak dollar.

Valid points.
