need help/suggestion with winter tires

Guys please help!

I have 20" AMG 5 spoke wheels on my CL550 4Matic
With 255x35 Continental tires. I know this is S class discussion. But S550 4matic has the same option for wheels and is actually the same type of car but sedan.

My questions is if it's good to use the same wheels with winter tires? Have anyone ever tried that to use 20'' 255x35 winter tires?

Or it is for sure better to buy 18'' or 19" wheels for winter. I was told that driving 20" with 255x35 winter tires may me very uncomfortable for my *** and may damage the wheels. Because winter tires are harder then summer tires.

Did anyone had any experience with that?

I would recommend getting a set of 18" take off's. I have a set of Dunlop snows and they are amazing...

Dunlop is good.Have it on my mom's E350.Drives in the snow like a champ.I don't think they have snow tires in 20's,but if they do,it'll cost you a lot.

thanks for replies

looks like everyone is using smaller wheels for the winter..

I will buy 18'' too

the only thing is that the price for wheels and winter tires will be the same as buying good winter tires for 20'' wheels

summer tires are bad for weather below 32 Fahrenheit or 0 Celsius

and won't work good with snow too

and I was thinking about putting winter tires on 20" wheels.. but owners manual tells that I need to use the same size as for summer tires (255x35).

And people tells me that winter tires are not that soft as summer. And driving won't be that soft and confortable. That it is better to use 18-19'' wheels and put bigger (more fat) tires. But actually nobody ever tried So that why I'm trying to find someone who had experience with 20" 255x35 winter tires on their S or CL class

I have just ordered a set of 255/35-20 97T Nokian HKPL with spikes on them. I live in Sweden and they arent the best at removing snow so this year im getting spikes on the tires, im the the tire and wheel business myself so I got them pretty cheap 900$ for all 4, but should be cheap in the US aswell

When I initially got my CL in 2007 there were virtually no 20" All Season tires available for my car, so I went with 19". Every 6 months I switch to a set of 19" Yokohama S4 Ultra High Performance All Season tires that perform well below 40 degrees and in the event of a sudden snow are good enough to get me home. The ride is a bit "different" on the all season 19's but nothing really noticeable.

The one thing I would definitely recommend is not to use the same wheels for the switchover from summer to winter tires. Any dollar savings in not buying new wheels will be more than offset with extra wheel damage and TPMS issues.

the price is really good..

when are you going to put them? I'm curious if the driving will still be as good as with summer tires. I mean that it will not be too hard on roughness or pits

The law here in sweden says from 1st of december to the 1st of april you have to use winter tires, but i got a big car show where my car is displayed the 10th of november so after that im taking the 22s of i doubt it will be any harder than them but more noisy for sure because of the spikes:-)

I can check with my wheel supplier in ft lauderdale if he can find a good deal on some tires for you tomorrow

yeah that why many people tell me not to use 20'' with winter tires. Because I may damage the wheels and also have some problems with suspension later. But no one had any experience actually.

btw do your dealer sells wheels too? So maybe I can also compare price for the 18'' wheels and tires.

Yeah but its all the chrome wheels mostly, you dont want that for winter:-) I personally choose looks before comfort on my cars but thats because I sell wheels every day and need to attract attention with my cars to get new customers:-)

I have so many customers coming in everyday saying ohhh we want 17" inch wheels for our brand new audi a6 for instance because otherwise we loose all the comfort.. That was true if they were driving a golf mk2 or benz w124 but things change, suspension is much better theese days... And since its become much more "normal" for cars to be factory fitted with large wheels the big tire sizes are also much much cheaper
