Intermittent rattle when hitting bumps
Hi all.
I just took over a lease on a 2007 Mercedes S550 4Matic for 12 months and really love the car.
The only thing I've noticed is an intermittent rattle when going over bumps - sounds like it's coming from somewhere behind the instrument panel (or to the left of it - possibly closer to the driver window).
Of course murphys law - when I went to Mercedes on a road test, no rattle could be heard lol.. And sure enough, an hour later when driving, it came back. No idea why it comes and goes. Does not seem to be related to cold weather (I live in Quebec)..
Any idea what could be causing it, or where i should advise MB to look if they cannot hear any rattles on a test drive?
Also my seat squeaks but I can live with that one...
Any help would be much appreciated

Hi and thanks for the reply.
They fixed up the mags and balanced tires before giving me the car. My rattle is definitely coming from inside, I hear it loud and clear even over small bumps. But have no idea where it's coming from, so frustrating ....

There is a small cover on the underside of the dash, I believe it's for accessing the diagnositic port to read error codes, mine sometims is not completely closed and rattles a bit...look under dash slightly to left of steering column? Its about 2 x 1.5 inches in size...

I checked that area you mentioned before driving to work and it seems to be pretty solid, but will check again when I hear the rattle on my way home.
I did hear the rattle again this morning and it sounds like it's coming from near the left driver side air vent (behind or beside who knows lol) to the left of the dash. Could even be further up near the windshield. If only it was not intermittent

EXACT same issue here. They had my car for two weeks trying one thing and then another and while it is better now I don't think it is nearly as quiet as it should be. I don't have a rattle anymore (mine was almost like a chirping rattle) but I do think there is a muffled thump type rattle when hitting bumps. It just appears that there are trim pieces that are not as secure as they should be - otherwise there would not be any of these noises.
In my case after replacing the driver vent (that did nothing) they went back in and covered up some things in and around the vent with felt tape or insulation or something and my chirp is no more. They also took the dash down and all sorts of other things as well so I have no idea where all they put that tape. My interior could be covered in it for all I know.
If anyone else has some experience with remedies for internal noises please share as I cannot think of many things more annoying than a fine automobile rattling or squeaking or thumping. I should only hear the engine accelerate and music in my opinion.

I had similar rattling noise and after listening it carefully, I narrowed down the rattle noise coming from from Front Seat Storage Container Area. The latch is not fully locked.
I found it hard to locate the noise source since the noise bounce around in the cabin.
Anyway .... it is a shot in the dark but check out the attached star bulletin addressing noises coming from cluster area.
