7 series or S class?

Hello all,
I currently drive a 2006 BMW 750i. It is a very nice car and I love it, but I am thinking I want a little bit more of a status symbol. I was wondering how reliable these cars are, and what I should expect to pay for a 2007-2008 S class. I am only 17 so I cannot buy from a dealer, so I am thinking the prices of a private party. Thanks, Matt

Well my car is paid off, and I would pay off the MB when I buy it, so I dont see what the problem is. I just want to have a nice car!

Good God,kid....buy a Chevy or Toyota and put the balance in the bank.Cars like that are for those 40+ who've either worked hard for the money or won the lottery.

Wow 17 Y.O. and getting a W221 , you are very privileged!!

Yeah get it if you can, its a great exclusive car, with passengers and owners as the pope and several ceo's and major politicians and other crooks,oil-sheiks and MB-afficionades as myself ,you are amongst a line of excellent people heheh.

Expect to set aside some money for repairs or get a warranty as f.e. suspension issues,(not uncommon) can get into the 2K mark.

Good luck finding a car that is well kept and maintained.

Well when you are used to shelling out 250k for a used combine and 200k for tractors 40k is looking pretty cheap! It won't be driven that often, as Mercedes arent really made for farming

I dont know about that. Unimog and G-wagon springs to mind.

Ever thought about buying a G55 ? It says "country boy" and "get the heck out of my way" at the same time. Maybe you can get a Unimog test drive with Governor Arnold.

Well I also have an f-150 and an f-250. So this is more of a classy car. I am thinking more for a car to just run to town with, something a bit more fuel efficent.

Everyone has different life, some are lucky to be able to buy something like that at 17, some have to work all of their life and still can't afford a C class. Who are we to judge? I got my first Benz at 21, can you call me privileged?
I've been working since 15 and my parents only paid for my first car wich was $3500 bucks. Everything after that I paid for my self. But living at home till I was 22 did help

In any case, I'd say that w221 S class is as reliable as 750 if not more. It does have more of a status. However, ive drivven couple of 750s and can tell you that S class will not perform as good as the 750 specialy 06 750 (good responsive trans) it will feel like a boat. 750 is much peppier. You will need to get an AMG in order not to go down in response and handeling when going to S class.
My opinion.

That is something I love about it.. I just am not sure about this yet, I love my 7 series, but I feel the design of it isn't what the Mercedes is. The MB has more class to it and is more of an eye grabber, but the 7 is better with handling and speed(which at 17 I love!). Sometime this week there is an 08 s550 about 90 minutes away I am going to look at and cruise in for a bit then make a final decision.

2007 S550 2005 745i
Just FYI

Hi bud look not to down Benz or anything but I have a 745i and an 07 S550, First I love my S class not a better looking sedan on the road with the power this car has but the 7 doesn't have near as many issues as the S-class. I just hit 60k with warranty and both front air shocks have gone out and the compressor. P.S. the air ride sucks you can actually bag the car cheaper and have full control of how high and low you want it. Oh yeah and most warranties aren't going to cover the air ride unless you have a mechanic that is good with words on Paper!!!!! But if you must have an S-class It is an awesome car as long as the money is there to keep up with it, I would stay away from the 07, It was the first year of production on this model and has a lot of issues that the 08 and 09 didn't also now that the 2013 is out you should be able to get a low mile 08 for under 45 even possibly AMG I only Paid 39 for mine 2 years ago with 38k on it and 22 inch Asanti's as part of the deal do your research and be careful with mods

I can say the same thing about my friends 750. He had shock issues at 50K
It's a generic statement about any car, the first year is usually not the best choice, but 07 w221 is still of high quality.

if it's status you're concerned with , try finishing high school first....
then the mirage of life at young age will be lifted from you....

also, try a Kia, for status..........

I've owned a 05 745i and just upgraded to a new S350, the S-Class eats the 7 Series alive, so much smoother, better features, everything is laid out in a better location, the S class looks better and it feels much nicer on the road.

Ohh and the S350 has a much better motor than the BMW, the BMW was leaking oil after about 20,000kms and some of the plastics broke after about 40,000kms.

I'd save up and buy a CL instead of the S though ( Basically a 2door S Class) if you're looking for something more sporty.

Oh come on... S550s are dime a dozen. Since you are looking to maximize the "status Symbol" quotient may I suggest that you instead look into a Rolls or Bentley?

7 series
I went and looked at an 08 S550 and it wasnt as great as I expected.. I loved it, but think I would rather have a B7. But about S classes being a dime a dozen, ive only seen 2 in Iowa! 7 series and S classes are rare in Iowa. But A bentley and Rolls royce? Ehh.. I would have to go all the way to Chicago(8 hours) to get it worked on. I dont think my rents would be very happy with either of those cars too..

B7 and s550 are in different classes. Look at s63 then compare to b7

The answer to your question will be very biased, since you are on mb forum after all. But yeah go for an S plus its way more reliable than BMW
