20x9 and 20x10.5 Will it fit/work on an S550 4Matic

Hey Guys,

I did a lot of research and asked a lot around about the 4Matic and running a staggered wheel setup and I have been getting mixed reviews. Some guys are running that for 30K miles with no issues some would never do it. I ran into some wheels I want to pick up and they are 20x9 fronts and 20x10.5 rears. I wil decide on tires once I get the wheels. From what I know the overall diameter has to be within .5 in order no to get codes or errors. I was wondering if these wheels will fit and in some owners that are running wheels on 4 matics will they work out well with the AWD. Any input at all will be great.

Thanks

Kamil

What tyre sizes are you looking at?

I don't usually say things like this, but - I'm not sure I'd want to take the risk.

Ok I will go by doing 20x10.5 all around I saw this done on a silver car with Vossen wheels and it should work better for the 4matic as well.

I run staggered set up on my s550 4matic around 10k miles now.
My set up is 22x9 et +29 and 22x10.5 et +42
Tyres 255/30/22 and 295/25/22 continental dws
I used a set of H&R 20mm ( .8") spacers to avoid rubbing (inner)
Issues? I have not experienced any.
My other set is also 22" staggered fitment. This set is custom fit without using spacers.
They are 22x9.5 front ET +24 and rear 22x11.5 et + 20.
Same tyres are recommended as listed above. I lowered mine with factory Star at MB dealership. I hope this help you sir.
Ned
IMO 20" is small with our s550 ( yatch on land)

I do not have 20" set up.
Anyway, she's sitting Vellano 22" staggered.

I'm pretty sure the rule about matching wheel sizes on an AWD car has to do with the rolling diameter (the total diameter of the wheel and tire) and not the tire widths. Staggered should be fine. The safety margin is no greater than a 3% rolling diameter difference between front and rear.

This calculator will let you try various tire size combos (width and sidewall ratio) and tell you the resulting difference in rolling diameter. Stay under 3% and you should be fine.

Awesome wheels, I was thinking about 22s but Im lowering the car and want to make sure its bot too big. A lot of you guys run 22s how is the ride quality?

Thanks exactly what I thought. I will still run 10.5 all around I think but maybe just different tire widths.

10.5 would be the rim width, right? It'll be a square (not staggered) set up. You'd want to run the exact same size tires on all four corners to keep the AWD system happy.

20x10.5 square set up on our s550. I have thought about this a year prior.
With 20x10.5, the minimum tyres set up is 275 to 295 recommended.
I don't think 275/35/20 would doable in the front. If you go with 255/30/20 to run stretch set up to fit the front, this skinny set up wouldn't look right in the rear.
20x9 square set up is more of ideally set up. Running 255/35/20 square with possible rear spacers unless you don't mind the rear wheels&tyres sit in a little.
My 07 Lexus gs350 that I had. I ran 20x8.5 square with 245/35/20" for 2 plus year with no issues. Keep us posted please. Ned

Yes Square setup but there is no way I can go with a wider tire in the back lets say a 275/30 or 285/30 rears and 245/35 front? since the S is such a wide and big car I don't want to have a skinny width tire in the rear. I could just go with a 20x9 front and 20x10.5 rear and run the different tire sizes on that but I saw the Silver S550 with the Vossen wheels (in the picture thread last page) and that guy is running 10.5 all around looking really good.

I dont know how it looks from the rear but cant find the tire sizes he is running.

You can go wider in the back as long as there's under a 3% difference in rolling diameter. Remember that the second number is a percentage of the first number. The first number is width in mm.

So a 275/30 has a sidewall height that is 30% of the width.
30% of 275 is a sidewall height of 82.5 mm

A 285/30 has a sidewall height that's 30% of 285 or 85.5 mm.

Divide the smaller number by the larger number and subtract that from 100 to get the difference. Between a 275/30 and 285/30 there's a 4% difference in the rolling diameter, which would be outside the safe margin.

If you go to that calculator I linked to, you can play around with tread width and sidewall ratios to get the mix under 3%.

My cls500 is getting new shoes. I have a set of Maya 20x9 and 20x10 staggered.
Town fair tires recommended 245/35/20 and 275/30/20. Tyres are ordered.

Do not listen to anyone that says you CANNOT do staggered, I have had my 4matic staggered width for a while with 255/35/20 front and 275/35/20 back (2% difference), I would have 295 on the back to make the difference only 0.23% difference but I have a 9.5inch rear rim so Id need a wider rim.

Exactly what i was already looking at...

Those look like the OEMWheelPlus staggered set 20-8.5/20-9.5 right?
Also how do you like the ride quality of the Conti's on your set up is what i was looking into for the last month.
Looks wicked...Please post some more pic angles
