This seems awesome in theory but I just have two main concerns:

1)will it thaw if you leave it off overnight

2) will it quickly rechill once you start the car

Perishables would probably not last long in it if you plan on short trips, whereas nonperishables like soft drinks etc would benefit from it. It also seems like it would be most beneficial on long trips

It would be nice if it could be set on a timer to stay cool when you leave the car, but no. My guess is it would stay cool for a few short hours. This is mainly for taking a long trip. A nice 7 hour drive to Boston in the summer...

Agreed... or if you could plug it in when parked in your garage so that it stays on overnight. Another concern I thought of is condensation. Wonder if corrosion or mold/mildew might become an issue

Remember it is not a freezer it is a Fridge, so thawing should not be an issue unless you wanted to have something thaw in it while you were on a trip - but you could do that in the trunk anyway. Perishables like meat (hot dogs, sandwich meat, salad, etc.), should be fine, especially if you plan well.

I does take up some space however it is very easy to remove, so I am not worried about the space at all. Once I order the fridge and install, I will provide measurements and how much space it actually takes up. I am gonna run a full size spare in the trunk too!

I actually have the W220 fridge and it is smaller in the rear but have same size fridge and also fits W221 with some small mods on bracket. I might go with that one.

Yeah my trunk is pretty large, and I think I can get all my stuff in there and have room for the fridge.

Ok, I got all the bolts, and screws now.

Status:
Internal harness and fuse installed in the Rear SAM. Switched out the Stiffening Frame, rear panel, and the cabin side take-up device. See attached pics. I have a few additional connector related parts on order, and then I save up for the fridge, and then just hook it up and bolt it down to the stiffening frame.

Wow, it is looking amazing. Mine also has the little cubby hole in the rear but does pass through the trunk. So it might not work?

Some on this forum indicate that some of the earlier models have the gas tank in back of the rear backrest, if yours is like that then that will not work. Mine had the take-up device that blocked the through-holding opening, so I had to find the part to replace it or modify it the existing part. To find out if your car has the through-holding opening, you need to take the rear panel in the trunk off and see if there is anything blocking the back of the storage area that resides behind the armrest

Correct. I did this mod recently and put in the W220 Fridge (not the W221) for the same reason. But I needed to modify the Stiffener frame and placed an additional bracket at the back of the fridge to hold it in place.

You modified the frame, I wonder if the frame on the W221 would have fit in your car to replace your existing frame? Care to share some pics?

Will post some pics when back home (on my hols past few days).

IF you use the W220 Fridge, you must extend the fridge power cord (located on right of fridge) to reach the W221 wiring harness located on the left of the trunk.

BTW, do you have a part number for the white flap which connects the power cord to the harness? (see picture taken from Steve's www.mbenznl.nl below)

I believe you are asking for the Receptacle/Cover - the part number for the receptacle for the Fridge is A1296900114 - see attached pics

BTW, thanks for the pic, as I now know how to connect my harness between the REAR SAM and the Receptacle/Cover when mine arrives. i would have guessed it anyway, but it is great to have this pic you provided.

It would only be for cool factor. $3500 and only can store a few cans, I have a portable carry along fridge/slash heater cooler you can plug into a cig. lighter socket that I can easily put behind the front seat that has more storage room than the stock fridge option. I also have a larger cooler fridge/heater for the trunk if I have a thirsty crew. Realistically a useless item because it takes time to cool and when you're thirsty, you go to the store for a fresh one.

It looks like after she opens the fridge that a light comes on inside it. I'm guessing it has a light in it?

Actually, I also saw the portable cooler units, but I did not want one of those as I do not want anything that would impact the passenger capacity or in cabin storage capacity as something as large as those portable coolers.. so at that point it would go into the trunk. I really want the option to integrate into the car like stock, after all this is an S-Class, not my Jeep The folding rear seats I retrofitted in my former W204 and W212 would allow for an accessible portable cooler/fridge though and I considered one in both cars.

Additionally the KHUL BOX Fridges only cost $3500+ if you go to a source that is not giving you the wholesale price. I even actually got quoted $5200 by a dealer and I just started laughing and showed them a quote from one of their sister locations that was less than half of what they were quoting, and I can even beat that price. I have seen prices for the W220 version for less than $1500. So the cost of fridge is not going to be huge when I finally order it.

CONOPS Strategy: Personally, I would start off with some cold ones in the fridge and then use the fridge to keep the remaining stock cold, while I am driving. Maybe put the portable cooler in the trunk and whenever I got caught in traffic, or had to stop for fuel, I could send a passenger to the trunk for a reload! Or maybe I could convince them to go through the sunroof while we are driving and........., nah, that would be too risky.
