AirMatic+Cold=Low S Class

I have an 07 S550. 65K Miles. Never had an issue with the AirMatic system til today. I went to the gym and walked out and the car was slammed. Started the car up and it didn't raise, started to drive slowly and didn't get the message that the car was too low, limped it home and parked it. What could be the issue?

Go to the W220 forum and read the "Start Here" thread at the top of the forum. Scan down to the Airmatic section. This will give you an understanding of the problems and solutions with the system.

Thank you for that! I learned a few things. I checked the relay and fuse, all checked out ok, the car didn't slam over night so I didn't think it was a leak, we got some snow so started the car up, let it idle while I cleaned the driveway, took the car thru the wash, came home and everything is back to normal, maybe something froze up yesterday? Is there anything we can add to the system to prevent moisture build up or freezing? In our semi trucks we use alcohol in the air lines to prevent freezing.

Thanks again MBWorld!

I believe the compressor uses a desiccant to remove moisture from the air. There should also be a filter on the intake. Scan the forum for desiccant and see what pops up. You may be having problems with the valve block assembly which is the device that controls all the air to the suspension. You can read up on that too. I would be reluctant to try alcohol only because I don't know if something could be damaged by it.

Ok.

The car has been fine all day. Will keep an eye on it. One thing I did notice is that when I push the "RISE" button the car does not rise nor do I see anything pop up on the dash about the vehicle rising. Could this be part of the valve?

Most likely an issue with moisture on the valve block if it happens at very cold weather. MB instructions are to look at moisture at the airmatic pipes and change the compressor if any moisture is observed. Another option would be to service the air dryer inside the compressor (dry the "silica" or replace with new silica), assuming the compressor is not worn out.

What do you mean by look at the airmatic pipes? Does the W221 have the "DESICCANT" Cartridge? I would like to fix this my self if possible and not spend the money at the stealership.

My rise button wasn't working, took my car to the wash and cleaned out all the snow build up from the wells and the rise button worked, parked the car and now the button isn't doing anything and the car is sitting fine.

Any ideas? What's the rise button controlled by? What should I check or change first?
