Rear electronic Headrest won't go down fully

Hi All!

There seems to be a little issue that I cannot find a solution for. Would appreciate any help possible!

An object got in between the electronic rear headrest whilst it was moving down into the "resting" position. So the headrest never quite managed to fully go down.

So now when it moves upright during use it is perfectly fine as always but when it needs to go back down it does never quite reaches the very bottom of the "resting" position.

Would anyone know how to reset this behavior?

Have someone check for fault codes with MB DAS. You can remove/reinstall headrest in question but not certain if this will resolve matter: http://workshop-manuals.com/mercedes...nt/page_21743/ (+ next page). I assume you are inquiring about 221 since you are posting in this forum.

Thank you very much konigstiger!

Indeed I am inquiring about the W221 but I initially signed up on the forum so I could fix up an older W220.

Your link really helped!

Looks like the "rear head restrain inclination adjustment motor" has to be "normalized" via STAR.

Either way it makes sense to check that first before starting to take things apart.

Shame that this cannot be done without STAR.

This is a rare option? I've never seen any s550 rear headrests go up by themselves. You have to manually move them back into place.

Incorrect. If you have the rear seat package, the headrests will go up automatically when somebody sits in the back seat.

It is an S350 but I assume you are right that this option isn't too common as I cannot find a video for it.

The propping up and down of the headrests is all done automatically. Once a person in the rear belts up, the headrest automatically rises. The driver can also make the headrests rise and lower them. The middle one has to be propped up manually.

I hoped that the resetting of this would be as simple as the windows on an W220 : )

This really should be a standard feature of all S550's. Why the heck is the button up front to make the headrests drop down, but no way to put them back up? This isn't 1970. Sometimes I'll never understand them.

Works

Just noticed this same issue with my right side rear headrest. After running the rear seat normalization function through my scan tool, the head rest retracts all the way down again.

So, YES...STAR or any other diagnostic tool which can perform the normalization function will work.

thanks for this info. My friend has a high end Snap On scanner, so we'll try this!

E-200 CDI on steroids (W212)
The headrest not coming up in a high end car is really something that i can't understand. It's not so easy to do since we have already "air" in the trunk. Never heard of a back seat package, long version only maybe?? Even though my S-class has less "gadgets" then my OLDER BMW 730D i still prefer MB.

Never had any problems with my 2004 BMW though....... and it just has 450.000Km
My MB is just a child near this one with 230.000Km.

Mine wouldn't go down all the way on the rear seat behind the driver's seat for almost a month, then out of nowhere it started functioning correctly.

Jason, W221s with the rear seat package all have the powered headrests. They don't just drop down, they are motorized and slowly go up and down with a push of the same button.

Yea it’s a shame thought was only 5% of S550’a have that. Should be standard.

Hi Ellton,

I was wondering if you had found a solution for your car headrest problem. The headrest won't manage to fully go down to the bottom of the "resting" position.

I know that this is an old thread. Would love to know what you did. Regards

Joel

See my reply a few messages above...use scan tool to initiate rear seat normalization and it should fix the issue.
