need some wheel opinions !! 20's or larger???

Ok guys so recently picked up a 2010 s550 certified pre owned, its an amg sport package so has the 19" non staggered wheels. Im a big custom wheels person and usually change them on all mycars. I currently have 21"s on my 750. Im looking at the Niche apex wheels as I like the clean simple design and they also appear reminiscent of an oem wheel. That said I don't want to spend money and not get the look I want, Im considering either 20" staggered or 22" staggered. Should I do the 22's ?? or ae the 20's enough? and pics would be appreciated!!!

2015 S550
22's if the car will spend a significant amount of time in the ghetto. 20's for the suburbs.

The staggered 20 x 8.5 & 20 x 9.5 AMG wheels from the current S65 look beautiful and I believe there are knock-offs made that can save you a bundle.

The car will spend most of its time in my 1.2 million dollar house driveway. so you vote 20's?

Depends on the weather
With all of the multimillion dollar houses here with s classes on 22's and bentleys and rolls royces and everything else around here on 22's....I sure don't consider it the ghetto nor do I think the nfl players, dr's and surgeons - including my wife, and lawyers who live in my community consider it the ghetto either.

That's not a very good statement to make...wheels are personal taste, just as cars are and everything else. I'm sure my neighbor with a bentley and escalade doesnt think I am poor because I have a measly s550 and 2 range rovers (which had 22's) before I got this...sometimes thinking before typing doesn't hurt. I'm not trying to start anything but I am sure there are plenty of folks who feel the same way.

I have 20's...just because I wanted to keep the excellent ride quality.

im also considering ride quality. I haven't seen any 22's up close, Im just undecided, I don't want the make the car look cheap either. Id like a 21 but don't really want to drop 1k a wheel anymore on customs. can u guys post pics w your 20's?

I think what Dave is saying, and I actually agree, is that cars with rims of whatever size that appear grossly disproportional to the car do lean toward a certain aesthetic that, let's just come out and say it, is uniquely popular to a segment of the black community, in the same way a slammed car on tiny wheels is an aesthetic that seems uniquely popular to a segment of the latino community.

It's not 22"'s per se, just the way that particular wheel size on this particular car crosses into that disproportion. There's a rule in comedy. If it bends its funny, if it breaks its not. To my eye, 21's bend and 22's break on a S Class, and I'm not even getting into what that much rim does to ride quality.

ChrisTheSwede has some pics of a nice split five concave staggered 21's in the picture thread on a black S550 that I think are the absolute perfect wheel size for the car. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Chris's wheels were a 22" actually and I loved them, they were vertinis and they don't make them in a 22" in the U.S. I think the 22's with a lip like chris's look like 21's and appear a bit smaller.

I wholeheartedly agree. You have at least 2 extra inches of rubber and air between the wheel and the ground. That 2 inches of circumference makes a big difference. On the BMW 7, the Aplina has factory 21" wheels. The 21" is probably the max that you can compromise, hence the reason Alpina went 21 and not 22. I sell wheels also, and it just sucks that manufacturers have caught on to the large wheel bug, but haven't quite realized that not everyone wants the 22" look and small rubber band tire... A lot of newer suv's now come with rubber band tires and you can't even jump the curb like you used to. I still love my 3rd gen 4Runner with 265/70/16's for that though.

I'd do 20's hands down if you can't find 21" wheel that's worth the price. Also, be sure to keep checking this thread - https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...heels-pro.html as this guy works directly with the manufacturer and can do 21" wheels for about $899 for all 4! He needs to see interested and told me he would do them if people seem open to the idea. This in 21" would look great.

I also think it was Mike that pointed out how the factory 19's on a W221 look much bigger than the factory 19's on the w222. It's funny how small the w222 19's look. Mike, what was your reasoning behind this?

I'd say 20" as 22's will require a lower profile......but 22's don't look ghetto.

^First two don't look ghetto. Last two do to me. Maybe the more complex designs on the first two do the trick. I still think generally 20's look a little small (and I have 20's) and 22's look a little large. 21's are the sweet spot for me.

20". See when you do a 20" like the Vossen Cv3, there middle area has more open space which makes it appear larger than it is.

18" & 19" wheels look small to me.

I currently have the 19" AMG wheels.......I'm looking to upgrade to 20" as I prefer to not have to look for and drive around every road imperfections with 22" wheels......21" are not nad.....but their oddball size makes wheel purchase & tire replacement more costly.

Mine had '22 on it. They were Asantis. Looked great made it ride like a truck and you could look at them and bend them. I am not a fan of the cheap cast wheels. They killed a whole evening for me when all 4 bent over a small pavement imperfections. 20'" wheel max IMO with the knowledge that you well eventually bend them.

Well that settles it then. We found a black guy with 20" wheels so I guess there goes my whole hypothesis.

What is that thing where guys take like a 20 year old domestic 4-door, paint it a crazy-*** color and put it up in the air on ridiculously large wheels? Here we call that "ghetto" for lack of a better word. Does that style of car have a more PC name?

Go ahead and define the meaning of the word "Ghetto" in the context of putting larger than normal wheels on an S Class. Nobody uses that term as a compliment.

"Wow Dave, your Mercedes is really looking ghetto!"

"Thanks man. I put a lot of time and money into it."

"Well it paid off! That thing would look right at home in the middle of a ghetto."

"Geez. Thanks!"

I'm just wondering if there's a better, less offensive word than "ghetto" to describe what we're talking about here.
