It's likely that you actually do have all of the channels. But you're likely just seeing what has been pre-set by the previous owner. If you have more than just the preview channel, then you have all of them available.

I wonder why people even bother with satellite radio. At least for music it is absolute wretched garbage sound quality- wise. Most of the channels sound like 56bit streams- flat sounding, wooshing trebles... Quite pathetic...

Depending on satellite receiver, it may not be possible to receive additional channels. Bulletin lists MY08-09 221.176 (s600) receiver as able to receive additional channels. Replacing receiver to current part 2168203589 (generation 3) + dealer installed Telematics update may be required. In accordance to bulletin, associated software update should be free.

The biggest downfall I see is the HK system being too strong in the mid-range which drowns out the highs and lows.

The only thing that sounds poor to me are the sports radio channels. Most of the time they sound like they are talking in a tunnel. Almost all of the music channels sound great to my non-Julliard trained ears, and has with every car I've had with Sirius in. I just wish Cousin Brucie on the 60's channel would just STFU already and play some music.

Because regular radio is awful notwithstanding any sound quality issues. I'm talking about the music and the shows, not the sound quality. Keep in mind, we are talking about music in a car, not an audiophile room in a home.

The amount of compression Sirius/XM has to use to offer so many stations being beamed down from outerspace results in some pretty crappy sounding stations. They do alot bandwidth based on the station. A talk radio station or a sports station gets very heavy compression because quality isn't much of an issue, and the stream size itself is very small.
A popular hits station that's not commercial-free gets relatively more bandwidth (less compression) but to me they all sound like a re-recording of a song made in a subway tunnel by drunk musicians.
I've experimented with lossless CD rips (1411kbs/16 bit-depth), lossless Hi Res tracks using an external portable Hi Res player (4608kbs/24-bit depth), local 256kb AAC files on my IPhone via the Apple internal player, and via a 3rd party player.
The best sounding audio in the car I've gotten was with the 256kb AAC tracks played through the 3rd party Elephant Candy EQ app where I could apply some compensating EQ to the midrange and add in some bottom, but for convenience and for streaming ITunes Radio I tend to just use the internal player and the internal EQ presets. Granted I've replaced most of the Harman/Kardon speakers in my S so your results may vary.
