That does sound like a solid design.

I called Mercedes (MB mbrace) for help when my battery went down at home, and they came out and quoted me $293 for a replacement OEM battery installed. If I would have went into the dealer to pick it up myself, the cost was $600. Luckily I did not need the battery replaced.

Getting ready to replace the original battery in my 2010 S550 (67,000 miles). Does anyone have any negative comments about the AGM batteries from an auto parts store instead of getting one from the dealer? Looks all positive so far on this thread.
Thanks

No problem with aftermarket units. Batteries plus has one for about 140 bucks that looks to be exactly like the OEM one. That's what I did and it works perfect. Fitment is exactly the same. I would guess it is one factory that churns them out and then different companies slap a sticker on them.

Just as FYI, they do need to be reset after battery replacement. It doesn't matter really, but there's a battery life counter that records how much power has gone in and out of the battery. When you replace it, it's supposed to be reset via SDS, so the car knows it's a new battery and can charge it accordingly. Older batteries are charged more gently to preserve their lifespan, so if you never reset it and the car thinks the battery is still 6+ years old, it will never utilize it 100% until it's been reset. That's why replacement batteries don't last like the original, the car is trying to softly charge an "old" battery that isn't actually old.

On my second starter battery in 6 years. First from dealer >$200. Second, from O'Reilly's; cheaper than dealer, but not much. Identical and, O'Reilly's is more convenient but O'Reilly's didn't have the starter battery 5 years ago. Good to know they do now. I think they have the trunk battery too. How the heck long do those last? I've never even seen mine.
Final note, starter batteries fail without a bang, whimper or even a click. Even static voltage seems normal!!! Ask me how I know... $135 tow and getting ready to check, R/R starter before I discovered it was Just the battery.
