OK so here it goes. I've been on the hunt for the source of this ridiculous noise coming from under the hood. I'm damn near out of options. The noise is best described as a high pitched scraping or whining. Almost sounds like air blowing. It is not normal. It distracts me and is very noticable. I've changed the power steering pump. Both upper and lower idler pulleys and tension pulley. Still no luck. For sure I thought it was going to be the power steering pump bc the noise is coming from right above it. If I get my ear in there it changes tones but man does it scream. I'm starting to think it's coming from the driver side camshaft. I don't know what else to do. I'm left with a few other things I could change i guess, water pump a/c compressor air pump etc... but I'm getting sick of or the guessing game. I avoiding the stealership obviously.

To figure out if its components driven by the belt or not, I guess you
can try to run without the fan belt and listen (for a short amount of time, obviously)?

Hi, I had a similar but different problem with the A/C pulley bearing.

I know what I had sounds different to your post but it's worth investigating the compressor pulley bearing first.
Drop the front under tray so you have access to the compressor and carefully listen to the centre of the compressor pulley with a short section of hose being careful not to get caught in the drive belt.
If that is it you can buy the pulley and bearing assembly separately. In my case the compressor was stuffed too :-(
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think if the cam was grinning like that you would have a check engine light and various other problems like lack of power (variable cam timing errors etc).
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Mercedes should have them as a spare, don't have my parts catalog computer with me at the moment so I cannot look up the number for you.
Alternately there are also aftermarket ones.

Dont but from the UK you should have heaps in the States.
Also maby call a few local automotive A/C parts suppliers if you have any in your area .
Note: forget the model numbers listed, the compressors are all almost he same but there are a few different widths and diameters of pulley so you need to measure your one.
Cheers.
