How about a 2013-ish S550 vs similar Quattroporte
I'm on my 4th S class (2000, 2007, 2010 and 2011), all bought used. I usually buy a 3 or 4 year old lease return with 35 to 40k miles. I couldn't be happier with the cars. I've always liked the looks of the Maserati sedan, but I like to drive on vacation, so put some pretty good miles on a car.
Do you think the Quattrporte would be a fiasco? I try to limit my miles to 20,000 per year.

A few years ago Bose sent me an offer that if I went and test drove a new Quatroporte they would send me a free pair of noise cancelling earphones. Some joint marketing thing with Maserati. I went down to the local dealer in Seattle and took one out for a ride. It was a fun car but I believe they have a Ferrari sourced power-plant which means they could cost a small fortune to maintain. I would never buy one as a DD.

Which Quattroporte are you thinking of?
I just got a 2012 S550 4matic with its new M278 turbo engine.
Man, this thing is fast for such a large and heavy car. And the 516 ft-lbs of torque!

2015 S550
My co-worker recently picked up a Ghibli Q4. Cool looking shape and pretty quick for a V6 TT with an awesome exhaust note. But the car screams cheap all over, with tons of parts out of the Chrysler/Jeep parts bin, including door switches, steering wheel, steering wheel stalks, nav system, and other odds and ends. It has a Ferrari engine, thus the seductive exhaust sound. He was able to pick up warranty coverage for 2.5 years through Maserati, but I told him that car must be gone no later than the day before that warranty expires. The car stickered for almost $80k in 2014, and he got it with 22k miles for around $46k. Italian car depreciation make our cars look like Lexus.

I would be looking at the "standard" v8 for the Maserati. I did get a look inside a nice example when I got my last S550, and it looks a lot more like an E350 than any S class.
When the time comes, I'll get the S for 2012 or 2013 with the newer, turbo engine. I've always been content with S550 power and rarely use enough of it to justify something like the amg engines.
