ESP, ABS and Cruise Control Inoperative

Hi guys,

On my fathers 2008 Mercedes S450 (same car as S550 with SWB available in Canada only) the other day his ESP, ABS and Cruise control become inoperative. When you start the car the errors don't pop up, but will come up when you start driving.

Of course the car is no longer under warranty and I was hoping someone whom has had an issue like this previously would be able to assist me.

I'm not sure if this will help but in the last 2000 miles the passenger side wheel bearing and brakes were replaced as well as the spark plugs and air filters.

In the last 500 miles the transmission mount, engine mount, passenger front air shock and transmission fluid was replaced as well.

There may be some useless information with the recent maintenance provided but hopefully someone can help me with this problem.

Thank you,
Asad

It sounds like it could be a wheel speed sensor that is not functioning or has a bad connection. If it began right after the wheel bearing and brakes were replaced, then you can likely narrow it down to the side the work was done on.

If the mechanic who did the work has STAR, they can likely trace the fault. Otherwise you may want to take it to your local dealer.

I had a local tech scan it but he wouldn't let me see the code. He said it could be a bunch of things.

I know when the air shock was being replaced, they said the passenger side speed sensor wasn't screwed in all the way (same side as the wheel bearing). Is it possible that it could've failed? I was hesitant to believe that its related as the bearing was done a couple of thousand miles ago.

It could be related or just a coincidence. Your dad should get the car to a mechanic who is familiar with modern MB cars....or to your local dealer so that they can properly diagnose the issue. STAR is really the only tool that should be used to scan your dad's car. The code scanners at most non-Benz repair shops or auto parts stores only pull up generic fault codes. They miss many of the other fault codes that STAR can pull.

This same thing happened to me this morning, coldest day of the year so far. All of the same lights came on. After worrying I’d have to pay a ton to figure it out, I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery, filled all of my tires to the correct pressure, waited 5 minutes, connected the negative terminal back on and all of the lights are gone. I ran out to the store about 5 miles away and came back, still no lights so I think it did the trick. Hope it helps!

Ah, the old, "I won't show you anything, otherwise it's tougher to lie to you later" bit. Classic. Do auto parts stores in Canada offer free scans like AutoZone does in the USA?

If you're lucky -- and most probably are -- it's likely one or more wheel speed sensors. They seem to be a common failure item, and they're not expensive -- especially since you don't have to buy them from Mercedes.

If you're very unlucky, a bad ABS/ESP control module can produce the same symptoms, quite possibly with others as well depending on how badly screwed it is (and, by extension, how badly screwed you are). You can even lose power steering. If that's it, it will be a trip to a dealer for a replacement. You can't transfer a used unit from another car.

Get the codes read with a decent scanner and see what it's complaining about. I'd suggest clearing all of the codes, drive it until you get an error message, then see what has just occurred.

Benz C250 2008
Hi again,
I finally had to replace the ABS unit under the hood and all the lights are now gone. The only issue was to find a ABS unit the the same number. It took me a while searching the scrap yard all over UAE. To be on the safe side I also replaced all the speed wheel sensors. I hope nothing comes up now related to ABS.
I hope the above helps.

However, my happiness was not very long lived.
Now, crack sound was louder and have to now replace the Lower thrust arm and the sway arm. Since I will be under the car, I plan to change the bushes of balance rod.
Good thing is I found all the part in the scrap with few days warranty.
Best regards
Arshshah
