I'm on my 3rd s 550, but the s 430 was my first "s". What a great car. I still think it's prettier than the s 550. I bought it used (30k miles) and drove it to about 130k with very little trouble. I did have to replace and rebuild the fancy suspension-- both front and rear.

I owned an S430 (W220) before my current S550 (W221). While I do agree with the W221 position in that rankings, I really don't think the W220 is fairly ranked at #999. For her time, the car was good if not great.
I believe that the W220 design gets a bad rap because it was the design of the of the 00's where cars were moving for the boxy look of the pre-2000 to the new, more streamlined lines of the current design trends. So, it wasn't "boxy" enough for the hardcore fans of the likes of W140 or even W126 and not "cool" enough to align with the more recent design trends that people seem to like. Caught in between worlds, it was misunderstood.

The W220 (which I owned) was also a notoriously unreliable car. Airmatic would shi* itself whenever, rust was cancerous, trim pieces were pretty poorly screwed on, creaks and groans everywhere. Oh and a speedometer that would crap out every 6 months also wasn't cool.
For the time, the car was great, but also for the time, the car was horribly unreliable. The post midcycle refresh where the tail lights had 4 white lines as opposed to 2 improved a lot of things, but still.

I NEVER liked the w220. Yes, I had a hard time getting away from the boxy design of the previous generation so that was part of it. The other part was that the just looked cheap. It had a lot of Chrysler technology on it and it showed. A friend of mine bought an S500 brand new off the MB lot and it rode great, it was quiet and stable at 120 mph but I hated how it looked at the interior was sub-par. The E class of the same era was a much nicer looking car. I was thinking of this thread today when I was at the supermarket and when I was walking back to my car an S430 was parked next to my S550 and I couldn't help but notice how the design as aged horribly where the w221 still looks good and how small, weak and inferior the w220 looks next to my w221 on the exterior and interior. the W221 is a beast. My neighbor has a w220 AMG which is in mint condition. It looks great but it's still a w220 and, I see him stare at my S550 every time I drive by.
