Engine Oil Cooler Leaking

You are correct that it is a gasket issue; however, I am being told that you essentially have to take the top half of the engine apart to get at the engine oil cooler/gasket. Very expensive... So I trying to find out if anyone else had this issue, and how did they resolve it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am being told to fix the oil leak, they essentially have to take the top half of the engine off to get at the gasket. That alone will be about $1,500-2000. Then you get yourself in the situation where if you already have the engine apart, what else should you replace... That could lead into several $$$ more. I was hoping to find someone who has already done this on the cheap, and gain any insights possible.

I have the same issue, my mechanic says it is a very common issue with this engine which is also used in the Sprinter van. $2200 repair for a $6 seal that Mercedes refuses to admit was faulty. As mentioned above the oil cooler is under the manifold which makes it a significant job. I believe there is an upgraded seal from Mercedes, but there was no problem with the factory seal (eye roll here).
I get a couple of drops a week, but I am going to get it fixed when the weather warms up...
