Synching Panoramic Sun Shades

Ever since I got my car I've had an issue with the sunshades being out of sync on my panoramic roof. When you press the button (either on the upper control panel or on the rear doors) the rear sunshade will move back and forth without issue. The front one however won't move, it stays in the open position. The weird part is that I can open and close the front part with a scan tool (my SnapOn or Xentry). If I close the front with a scan tool the next time I open the sunroof the front sunshade will open but then will not ever close again. So I know the motor at least does function in the front. Anyone have any ideas? I guess the easy option would be to replace the sunshade motor for the front (even though it does technically work). But any ideas other than that? I've also tried closing them both, then disconnecting the battery, waiting, and then reconnecting. Didn't effect anything.

I have buttons separate for the front and rear halves of the sun shades. I did not know they somehow need to be in sync. I use front button for the front half and rear button for the rear.

That's interesting, I haven't seen that before, I thought we all just had the one button on the upper control panel.

Mine is the same as Arrie's. The big switch which controls the roof glass controls the front shade. The silver button in line with the lighting buttons on the upper console controls the rear shade.
Mine do not move together, but are controlled separately.

There is the clue that may point to the answer.

You can command an open or close with the diagnostic tool, and it will work -- so as you correctly observed, you know the motor is good. A defective switch would cause the symptom you describe. The "open" contacts are obviously good, but the "close" contacts may not be. If you poke around in XENTRY/DAS you will probably find an actuations page that will show you the state of the overhead console switches, so you can see if the state changes when you push the switch in each direction.

I would expect that there may also be a limit switch in each end of the shade travel... one to stop the motor when it's fully open, and one to stop the motor when it's fully closed. If the "shade fully closed" switch is stuck, that would also prevent the motor from closing the shade since it "thinks" the shade is already fully closed. In many cases (like power windows) there isn't a limit switch, but the controller senses the current drawn by the motor nd stops when that indicates the window is fully open or closed. I don't know what method the shades use, but I'm sure someone here does.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I mistakenly thought that button opened and closed both the shades but looks like that isn't the case. I'm also leaning towards some sort of broken switch in the overhead control panel but I bought a beat up junkyard panel and tried the same but nothing changed. I'm wondering if it could be on the motor itself. I'll play around with it and report back.

Got this figured out today. Took out the overhead control panel, opened it up and swapped the circuitboard from the junkyard one I had (the case was a different color from my interior). Installed it back in and everything seems to be working perfect, front sunshade opens and closes and the sunroof opens all the way now. Before it was only opening about 6 inches and not going back any further. The original circuitboard didn't have any signs or damage or corrosion.

Nevermind, spoke too soon. Now when I hit the rear sunshade button from the overhead panel it opens about 3 inches and stops. When I let go and hit the button again it closes it. I can't win.
