I went to change my poly V belt, but can't get any combination of wrenches/sockets to allow me to access the tension bolt. There's a lot of parts to work around...can anyone tell me what you used to change your belt? I looked at trying to access it from underneath, but that looks to have parts blocking it as well.

I have a 2008 CL550...I cross post here because there is almost no one looking at the W216 forum. Mine has the M273 engine, just like a S550.

I think, among other things, it is the high pressure line for the ABC system....not something you casually remove.

Sorry I'm not familiar with doing this on the M273. I have a S550 with the M278 engine and its very easy to change the belt, took me like 20 minutes. I did have to take the fan out but that's very easy too.

Don't even have to take the fan out on the M273. It's a bit tight and less struggling/arm cuts if you also have access to the bottom to hook it on the A/C compressor and help it over the P/S pulley.

Not sure if you figured it out yet but on my M278, this nut in red square is where you put a socket with a long breaker bar to release the tension.

Okay, I've got the wrench I needed, and have the belt off. I've never changed a belt before, so this is new to me. I've got it routed correctly as far as I know, but I can't lift the belt over the final pulley...there is just not enough slack, even with the tensioning device relaxed. Is there a trick I'm missing? The videos of the procedure I've watched make this look easy...what might I be missing here? I could use a crow bar to stretch the belt over, but the videos of people putting fan belts on their Mercedes do not seem to need to do this. Any thoughts folks?

Something doesn't sound right, its a 15 minute job and is easy. I wonder if they sold you the wrong belt because if the tension is fully released, its sloppy and fits very nicely. then you just release the tension and make sure its centered on every pully. Maybe you wound it wrong perhaps, just my thoughts.

Well, nevermind. I got some more leverage on the tensioning device, and got more slack in the system. Now I have a broken pulley, so I'll have to wait until Wed. to get everything installed.

I just looked up your car and am looking at the engine, did you take out the fan? If you didn't, mine is only held in by two metal clips at top, one on each side and then one electrical plug and it pulls right out. It gave me plenty of room to change my belt recently.

I did not, but that would certainly make the job easier. I looked at taking out the fan on WIS, but it gave a long list of procedures that seemed more trouble than it was worth. By that time though, I had almost got the problem solved, so did not pursue. But out of curiosity, I'm going to check out the fan/how easy it is to get out on my model later today when the pulley comes in.

A lot of us on this forum have bought the pirated software off of Ebay It is a pain to install/use for those of us with Mac OS, but it is a valuable resource.

Considering it runs in a VM, shouldn't that be pretty OS agnostic?

Well, not sure. I'm no software expert, but I was under the impression that there were extra steps involved with a Mac. The instructions I received from my vendor were for Windows, and some of the settings ended up being a little different. We had to email back and forth a few times to get it set up. Maybe others would have no problem.

But, as I did the job I looked for the power steering pump and could not locate one.

My engine looks like in picture below. The 4b location does not have any kind of a pump in it. It is just a big pulley and I think it is place for the ABC pump for cars that have that system.

Thought it is electric power steering but there is a small reservoir in right side of the engine bay in front of the engine coolant reservoir. A hose from it runs to the bottom of the engine bay, across and then disappears under the A/C compressor.

Can anybody shed light to this as where is the pump and if electric, why reservoir...?

Decoding my VIN does not say anything about power steering.

Couple things.

1) We have to remember that there are like 3 belt configurations for these cars, and that's just for V8s. M273 07-09 which has a conventional power steering pump. On the facelift 2010 and 2011 cars (US market, still M273), the steering is self-contained electrohydraulic with no external P/S pump. And then there are the M278 cars from 2012-2013 which I assume continue to use that self-contained electrohydraulic steering system.

2) The location in that diagram is used on the X166 for the hydraulic antiroll system (active curve control I believe it was called). There may well be another application where there is a pump there that is used for power steering but not on the W221.
