Machine Buzzing Noise Cold Start Overnight (video)

Hey all,

A couple weeks ago I lost power to cylinders 7-12 on my 07 s600. I changed out the VT which immediately restored power and everything has been fine until a couple days ago when I started getting misfires on cylinders 2,6,7 and 10. I have 111,000 miles so I’ve ordered new coils and plugs from FCPEuro but I noticed an alarming buzzing sound at startup (only in morning after car sits all night).

See video here:

Any ideas? Sounds like it’s coming from the passenger side. Please note at the 52 second mark the noise stops. This is what has happened each morning this week.

Checked pentosin level with vehicle warm and cold in both ABC and steering reservoirs (flushed system 2 months ago. New filter and ps reservoir) the level was just above full mark on both and has been at same mark since I changed it as I check weekly due to a bit of paranoia since it’s my first time flushing the system.

I also had the ISM replaced 2 weeks ago.

Thanks so much for your timely reply! What exactly does it do? Would you happen to have a part #?

Thanks again!

Air pump, this air pump is activated just for 50s when the engine is cold. it will blow a fresh air to the exhaust manifold so that a rich exhaust can be re-burn one more time for heating oxygen sensors as well as catalytict converter fater to reach working temperature.

This air pump is have 02 bearing 608, you can tear it a part and just replace a bearings .

second that! Extremely helpful! Doing some research now to explore both options. Any DIY reference information would be amazing.

I’ll post anything I find that’s helpful as well

thanks

If this is your problem current part # 0001407085 (MB MSRP $1220) shop previous part # 0001405785 for ‘Bosch’ replacement. There are cheaper aftermarket units but IMHO stay with Bosch.

This was a common issue with the previous gen motors (113, 113k, 272, 273, etc.). Benz quit using them with the newer gen motors. Search/youtube any car that used the older gen air pump motors til your heart's content.

And by the way, sans the air pump, your car sounds mean!

Ok! Awesome thanks! Saw SKP brand on RockAuto for about $100 which I thought was suspect and based on the correct part # you provided the RockAuto part isn’t even correct as it looks to be for the w220 but is listed on their site under the w221 S600…Smh

FCPEuro has the Bosch for just under $400 with lifetime warranty. Would you recommend just going with MB directly on this one and paying the 12?

Ok! A couple of the videos I’ve seen so far make it look like a very straightforward job! I mean, I did the radiator without taking half the front end off like some of the videos I saw so I definitely “chew the meat and spit out the bones” so to say and set up my game plan by watching multiple videos in conjunction with workshop information when available.

btw, thanks for the compliment the beast definitely has a ferocious sound

FCP Bosch, then rebuild and recondition the old one with fresh bearings and keep as spare. Fun project.

So, I assume the 278 engine also has this air pump. My car engine is very loud at cold start. Could it be because this pump is somehow "open" to the exhaust whole pumping air in the exhaust? The sound disappears in just a minute or so.

No air pump on 278. 278 is the next gen 4.6 TT, 273 is 5.5 NA older gen.

I can’t wait! I almost want to do the rebuild immediately to share pics and notes with the forum lol.

I’m doing both the coils and plugs this weekend. If I could source the bushings today I’d definitely attack it immediately just for the educational value as the new pump won’t arrive til next week anyway.

I’ll see what I find!

Cool. I love doing that kind of stuff. I just installed a brand new $700 320 amp alternator in my W212 and have the old one in pieces while I rebuild it with new components and powdercoat the frame. Then I'll throw it on a shelf where it'll probably sit forever, but it was a fun project!

love it! I’ve been eye-balling the voltage transformer I just replaced (which is why I’m now doing the coils and plugs tomorrow) cause I want to open it up and tinker with it.

Definitely wasn’t wasting time taking it back the the dealer for the $65 core lol. This beast drinks $62 in gas to make the 3mile trip back over the the stealership so I’d rather keep it as a future project.

Or If Clark from V12icpack wants both my old coils and the VT I’ll give them to him so one of my fellow V12ers can bask in the glory of upgraded equipment!

But I’ll probably open up that VT soon and like you, fix it and put it on the shelf as a trophy piece. Lol

I just uploaded a video of a guy who tore the pump apart and cleaned it with some shop air and injected grease into the bearings which seemed to fix the whining.

I plan to grease the bearings if I’m unable to replace as you suggested. Any suggestion on where I could source the bearings?

Haha funny, 608's are skateboard bearings. There's only 10,000 options out there for those. Take your pick.

Amazon Amazon

I will only use NSK or SKF Japanese bearings. Everything else is junk. Pull old bearings, verify the bearing number on the dust shield, order wherever.

It’s almost 6am I’m going to take a nap!
