Spark plug replacement; plug boots necessary?
Replacing the boots doubles the cost, but is it necessary or at least strongly recommended? Not trying to cheap out here, but don't want to **** away money when it's not necessary. Who knows what costly repair is ahead!!
And what are the recommended plugs? Rockauto has NGK95983's for $3.84 each!

No need to replace the boots. But depending on the mileage, specially the V8's, can benefit from replacing coils. Now, as long as you don't have any misfire or slight vibration, you should be good by just replacing the spark plugs.

We use genuine Mercedes Benz spark plugs in the shop. I had a few aftermarket come back misfiring. For your engine(M273) you can get away by using the Bosch OE finewire platinum. Part number YR7MPP33.

Great, that's what I ended up ordering last night. What about applying anti seize gel to the plugs? I read somewhere that Mercedes recommends NOT applying it.

Agree no anti seize, it changes the torque-tension relationship.
I would change the boots. They are rubber and don’t last forever. W221 is an old car now.

Workshop Information System (WIS) does specify a grease to put on inside of boot to facilitate future coil removal.
Correct sparkplugs for your vehicle are
NGK PLKR 7A
or
Bosch Y 7 MPP33
Bosch YR7MPP33 are American aftermarket items not appropriate for your car. The R means resistor and resistor plugs are not specified.
