2011 S550 4matic Bi Xenon Bulb Change

Wow, this was a pain but for whoever else runs into this. The Bi Xenon version does not have the 2 wire clips that squeeze together. I was going looney with a mirror trying to understand why I didn't see clips if WIS clearly states that 2 clips should be released. On mine it's simply a turn twist. Counter clockwise to remove. Bought my bulb from dealer but I saw Sylvania versions of this for about half. Be sure to reset Xenon service hours after changing bulbs. BTW, although it's tight, I only pulled the 1 screw for the expansion tank and lifted and held out of way. This is for right side. It's REALLY tight but with patience and some scratches on your hands, it's doable

I’ve done this before a couple times actually. I found it way easier to just take off each front wheel and the inner fender well plastic and the bulbs are right there. Just reach up, nno hand scratching, etc. I replaced all of my bulbs, with either the 100 watt halogen and the D1S bulbs that way. I get all my bulbs off of EBay (Phillips brand) and haven’t had a problem with quality or color. Never knew about the hrs reset….. how is that done?

Good to know. I have a buddy with those systems so the next time I change things out I will have him reset.

I concur...just easier to take off the wheel/liner. I tried to replace all the front bulbs, but I could not get to the left front turn signal nor the left standing light (I think it was that one). Were you able to get at these as well, and if so how?

I apologize, I should have been clearer in my response….. I have changed the low beam, high beam and the bulbs that turn when the car wheels turn and the fog light bulbs, by taking off the front tires and inner fender flaps. I have after market parking lamps that are LED, I replaced the whole parking lamp housing via reaching in from the tire well area. I have an 07 S550 and have not had to replace turn signals, yet. Knock on wood!

A couple weeks back I had no problem replacing the passenger side bi-xenon on my 2008 S550 by unbolting the expansion tank and setting it aside. Bulb had the two clips. Total time was like 10 minutes max. No way the fender well route takes under 10 minutes.

You are right. The tire/fender well route does take longer, but I think it’s easier to get to fog lights, cornering light and headlights a lot easier. I also have a lift in my garage, so that makes a world of difference too.

Yours has the two clips, I went looney because even WIS shows that bulbs are held in with 2 clips. That seems to be for early models , 2011's are twist in. Yes I agree that it's simpler from above but it sure is tight for such an expensive bulb, bought from dealer, 250 after tax and that's below list. Didn't want the possibility of an aftermarket bulb looking different

I change both of my D1S bulbs in pairs, always. I run the 6000k color temp. And I have the corresponding Slyvania crystal clear look in halogen form in 100w for the inside cornering lamp the high beam and the fog lamps. I usually get a pair of D1S lamps on eBay for between $30-50, they last 2-3 yrs and I buy new ones. Far better than the $250 for 1 light at the dealer. And they want at least in Ca., $500 bucks to install.
