Tire recomendation for 2011 S550 4MATIC

Hi everyone.

Time to shop for tires. The original factory tire size in my 2011 S550 is 255/45 R18. So far, I've looked at:

Continental Extreme Contact DSW06 Plus 103Y
Potenza Sport 103Y XL Ultra High Performance
Michelin Primacy Tour XL 103W

I'm leaning towards the Continental based on recommendation from America's Tires.

Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

If DWS06 is on your list, Michelin AS4 should be, as well. That's what I have on my S550 and I also had them on my E55.

Second the Michelin AS4. Quiet, and performance when needed.

I've used DWS for many years (20?), and have them on my CL...best tire for a variety of driving conditions, imho.

DWS06 is a fine tire. They tend to wear well, perform OK, and are usually somewhat reasonably priced. I just think the AS4 is a better tire.

Nokian zLine A/S. Best of them all and lowest prize as nobody (but me) knows about them.

Have them under my E550 and S550. Quiet and comfortable with better wet grip than any of the big names. Can't go wrong with these.

Agreed. Nokian makes great tires. I've had a set of zLine previously.

the 255/45/18 size are silly money and in my mind not very nice for ride or handling

re. budget brands - there are a lot of upcoming lesser brands - who make OK tyres - but one should bare in mind, in robust reviews there's still a major difference in all round comprises between premium brand and cheaper alternatives - most revolve around overall safety and a well rounded tyre you enjoy using - so many owners trade $50 cost per tyre for 5m longer stopping distances or falling off the road in heavy rain - alongside more noise and less refinement

the trouble is that trade of is usually offset with an incorrect perception of the risk - using male ego like 'I'm a better than average driver' (when most are as bad or frequently worse) and 'well I don't drive like an idiot'. But no one crashes or has an accident in ideal conditions - they come when something unexpected and or unavoidable happens in a split second - and the premium tyre might give you a scare and the others bite

I find this site is about as good as any out there https://www.tyrereviews.com/Search/Size/255-45-18

Disagree - I think 18" is perfect for the W221. I have been pleased with the ride AND handling actually (at least on the Michelin AS4s). I run them at 35/35 psi, and usually in sport mode. I am in New England with crappy roads.

comparison are good guide to who knows what they are doing

https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/...-Tyre-Test.htm

but there are traits
continental - for high speed attack - excel over 120mph too many compromises for a luxury car
michelin - won't go far wrong but likely you'd find others you like more
pirellli - win in the dry, die in the wet
goodyear - usually the best but somehow most hate them

I've had only two experiences with Continental.

Back in 2011 I was in the market for some performance tires for my CTS-V. I read Tire Rack reviews and the ExtremeContact DW was highly rated and reasonably priced. It seemed perfect. Except, I hated it. Soft sidewall was probably my biggest complaint. It made the car feel terrible. I sent them back and sprung the extra $ for the new-at-the-time Michelin Pilot Super Sport (at the time was shockingly affordable compared to the gold standard PS2). The PSS made me a Michelin convert. Ended up rolling those for the next 10 years until I sold the car actually. Just the perfect tire for that car.

Moral of the story: can't always go by review scores. If you actually took the time to read PSS and DW reviews though, the signal was there, just not represented in the average scores.

Then in 2017 I bought a Cadillac STS V8 AWD. Ended up with the DWS06. They wore well, rode well and were affordable. They left something to be desired in performance, though. Kinda meh overall but a solid choice if you drive more gently. I actually exercise my S550 so I appreciate what the AS4 brings to the table.

you can disagree -

I've use summer and winter tyres on OEM 8.0" wide rims with 235 55 17" and it was a more nimble, far more comfortable, better car
I then put OEM option 8.5" wide rims with MO (Merc original) Dunlop 255 45 18 (101 load rated) tyres and it was a catastrophic mess in comparison - slow, rough - hop skip and jump with zero refinement
Currently on OEM 8.5" wide rims with 235 50 18 (97 load rated) Michelin Primacy 3 (comfort edition) and its less bad - but still about 45% behind the ugly 17" ones

.
Strange one on the conti's - usually come out as the younger driver's nutter tyre - in affluent parts of Germany commuting is all about bad driving and hoping to maintain >130mph, and they love them

Totally agree on the tyre reviews, they often come up with very muddled results for the winners - to my angst, I find often too much focus on elements that aren't that big a deal then miss scoring dangerous attributes harshly enough

Based on my experience and I guess just my "car guy" experience, the only downside to Michelin in any given category, other than price, is that they have a reputation for dry rotting perhaps more than other tires. For a garaged vehicle, I think this can be safely ignored. For one parked outside (as is my S550), well, could be cause for concern. Mine are only 2 years old though so it will be more years before I obtain that data point. Actually my S550 came to me with 10+ year old Michelin MXM4s or whatever. They WERE dry rotted but also still rode 100% smoothly. I remember that impressing me. Actually they handled ok, too.

the other strange one is USA seem to get loads more tyres we never see in Europe - and I think (but no real knowledge) you mostly buy all season - but don't realise that's what you have

UK used to be all season - and slowly they pushed the focus to 100% summer tyres that the whole of Europe uses for the last 15 years - as the UK is relatively mild and we are all stupid lemmings - they don't understand how a car should feel or behave in summer or winter - grid lock of the road network is why we don't all just die... Other parts where they get a bit more of a cold snap - and put less salt down, like NL, BE and DE its mandates at certain calendar part of winter you must move to winter tyres

Yes. Look at that, #1. Actual testing is different than averaging customer reviews I guess.

I suspect the US market is driving a lot of all season innovation and advancement. Like I said, I even put these AS4s on my E55 and they were pretty good. Performance all seasons wear longer than summers, often are cheaper, and they will actually be safe down to freezing temps and below (nevermind that you can actually damage many high performance summer tires in cold weather). They are a LOT better than they used to be. 20 years ago I would have said all seasons are worst of all worlds. Now I think they are often all anyone in the US needs except for specific snow belt people, and specific performance car people.

Everyone in the US knows Tire Rack even if they have never bought from them.

Tire Test Results : Testing Premium Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires 2021 (tirerack.com)
Tire Test Results : Testing Premium Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires 2021 (tirerack.com)

Two different tests.

Plus check out this snow test: Tire Test Results : Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4: Winter Preview Drive (tirerack.com)

Huge snow advantage for the AS4, surprisingly.

Tire Test Results : Testing Premium Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires 2020 (tirerack.com)

Michelin's Pilot Sport All Season 4 is an athletic and eager tire that is very nice to drive in a performance setting. On the road, the ride is taut, with some noticeable tread noise and handling that is light, fast, and precise. In dry testing, the tire is a talented and willing partner that feels natural and very capable. When driving on the wet track, the poise and communication made it the easiest and most satisfying to lap, even if it was slightly outmatched in outright capability. Light snow traction is a strong point for the tire, particularly when combining acceleration, braking, and handling around the track.
The big question is, what happens as the tire wears and ages? I would put money on the Michelin to maintain a more consistent performance level even as it wears but I would like to see the data if available.
