Oil Level Discrepancy

I just changed my own oil on this 2007 S65 for the first time (normally done by local shops). I put in 9 quarts of the published 9.5 and let the car measure it, where it said the engine oil was correct. I added the extra 0.5 quarts just for kicks and had the car measure it again, and now it says to add 1 quart of oil on the next re-fueling.

I'm used to using dipsticks and just verifying this, myself. Why would the vehicle say the oil level was fine then say it was low after ADDING oil? I did not drive the vehicle in between readings, but did verify the reading after driving the car about 10 miles to still read that it needs another quart.

Vehicle has just over 30k miles, if that matters.

Drive the car some more. Put another 20-30 miles on it, then see what the car says about the oil level.

It’s way easier to add oil than it is to remove some. It will be fine to drive it 20-30 miles with 9 quarts in it.

Engine oil expands greatly when hot. Maybe that’s why you go a different reading.

My V12 is also very picky about being level before it will report an accurate oil level electronically. If the car is tilted sideways or facing slightly up hill, I routinely get a 1 or 1 1/2 quart low warning even after a fresh oil change when I know there is 9 quarts on board. I suggest you move the car to a known flat and level location and then check the oil electronically. With 9 quarts on board of new fresh oil and a flat level location, you should get "Oil level OK".

Honest question, where does anyone find a perfectly flat location? Every one of my garage stalls is slightly out of level (bubble is JUST outside the level markers on a level) for water drainage and my entire driveway pad is also out of level, for drainage. I can drive around town with a 6 foot level and try to find a perfectly level parking spot if that's what it takes, but I've always wondered what we're considering to be flat.

I'm still baffled why this thing read full at 9 quarts and in the same location without any miles between, reads low at 9.5 quarts.

Believe it or not, but I usually find the best and flattest and most level place to be at the fuel pump!! Give it a try and let me know.

the v6 tractor can drain 2 litres back from cooler and oil gallerias - level check should be within 2 mins of turning off a hot engine....

BM bikes do it running and have all these lunatic parameters must be hot, must be stopped, must be in neutral

The indoor garages at the mall are pretty flat. I use them for calibrating the ride height.

Figured I'd update this thread for any searchers. I was able to level out my vehicle by putting 3/4" thick wood underneath the back tires in my garage, offsetting the negative slope found in most residential garages for water out-flow. After doing so, the car read the SAME 1.5 quarts low, so I added a quart (because I'm worried about overfilling) and the car reads that the oil level is okay.

I will continue to watch the oil level and see if anything weird happens like the vehicle asking for more oil, but right now my car apparently like 10.5 quarts of oil, as measured on darn-near perfect ground.

Thanks for the update. Now that you added the extra quart of oil, did you do another Check Engine Oil? I would at least expect it to say Oil OK or Add 1/2 quart next fuel stop. Let us know!!

Just re-read your post and you said after the added quart of oil, it read Oil OK. Perfect!!

Not to insult you.....Are you sure you really counted nine when you refilled?

Either way, you are operational and I am glad it worked out well.

I've had that thought myself, but I remember the way I got to 9.5 quarts and was able to confirm in my remaining quart count that I almost definitely filled 9.5 quarts. What I'll do is in the next oil change (which is probably far away), I'll pay close attention to how much I put in and what the car reads afterward, and if it take 9.5qts I'll come back and update this thread so this doesn't create confusion.
