Gas mileage

I asked about this on the thread started by Kratos, but I am going to start a new one, since I got no responses there.

Yes I know that when one spends over $100K for a car, gas mileage is not a big deal. However, it is to me psychologically speaking. My 2008 LS RWD is rated at 15 and 24 (city and highway). However, I get at least 26 and sometimes near 30 on the highway (even when I speed up to at least 80mph). Obviously, this depends a lot on weather conditions (especially wind direction). The 2014 LS460 AWD is rated at 16/23. The new S550 4Matic is rated at 16/26. I know that the new S550 engine is more efficient than the previous model. Therefore, I suspect I will likely be getting close to 30 mpg on the highway and probably 18 in pure city driving. Obviously, this will depend a lot on how aggressive one is in driving.

I would love to hear from Kratos or anyone else on their experience to this point on gas mileage with the new S550. A friend of mine from NJ told me that he was getting a little better gas mileage on his 2013 (W221) than what he use to get on his 2010 LS460L and he was getting about 27 mpg on the highway on his LS.

My average for the first 5,000 miles is 20 mpg, and that is mostly mixed city/highway driving. On a 500 mile trip I took recently I was getting 28 mpg, but I am careful and don't "punch it" often.

Thanks for the input Steve. That 28 mpg seems pretty good. I take several long trips during the course of a year so it will be interesting to see what I get.

2015 S550 ordered
From a gas mileage perspective, I'm really curious to drive the 2015 S550H plugin hybrid. I was lucky enough to get to ride in a prototype at the Frankfurt auto show and I'm really interested to see how it drives. I've ordered the 2015 S550 for European Delivery in June but I'm going to watch that one next year with interest.

I'm a fast driver, but I always was a fast driver.

I think the 2014 S550 drinks a lot more gas than my W221 did.

I feel like everytime I look down, the % has reduced. 90% to 80% happens in like 20 minutes or whatever.

I've been getting 26-30mpg's on the highway depending on how fast I'm going. 80+mph speeds will yield the lower of that range.

But around the city, this big ship drinks up some gas! That percentage drops like crazy, LOL.

Thanks Kratos! Your highway gas mileage is about what I figured I would be getting. Do you use the Eco stop/start feature in city driving? I imagine that should help with city gas mileage. What about the Distronic Plus driving in the city? I tried that in my test drive and thought it was pretty awesome.

I don't like to hear that. I hope you're wrong. Everything I have read suggests that the W222 is more fuel efficient than the W221.

The ECO mode does save some gas, especially when at long red lights and traffic stops. Also ECO mode forces the car into the tallest gear ratio the rpm level will allow. If it can get you to 7th gear without killing the engine, it will definitely try.

I drove the last tank to empty and the trip calc gave me 346 miles which makes it around 16-17mpg. I drive it with a lead foot most of the time, sometimes (almost everytime) the pedal is to the floor on S-mode when entering a fwy. Its true the fuel indicator seems like its always lower every time I look at it. I have a feeling it is just more accurate than in the w221 where you could go 40 miles and the tank still showing full.

the 18" wheels will get you the best MPGs. I'm sure that's what they used for the EPA ratings. the 19" and 20" wheels will deteriorate the ride and MPG

Great! That makes me feel better. I wanted the most comfortable ride so I ordered mine with the standard 18" wheels.

Absolutely. I filled up last night at 8pm to 100%. I drove 7 miles on the parkway to my house from the gas station.

Down to 90%.

Seriously? lol

Hate we have to sacrifice ride for a better look. Guess we can't have both...
