Parktronic with active parking assist

Still finding my way around with my new '15 S550. I have not yet used the active parking assist feature. I was watching some youtube videos to educate myself on its use, but the ones I found were all for parallel parking. I understand that the S550 can also park at right angles to the direction of travel. This is the part I am not clear on. Does the car pull into the space "nose in" or does it back up into the space? I am guessing that it will back up into the space since the car would have had to travel beyond the space to size it up. Can anyone who uses this feature frequently please clarify?

Second question: I know the message on the display states that you are responsible for control of the accelerator and the brake. However, the manual is not clear on whether you touch the accelerator or brake pedals ONLY if you need to intervene or do you still have to use the accelerator when pulling into or out of the parking space? Sorry for the noob questions... just don't want any mishaps!

It backs in, and you use the brake and accelerator. The car helps you by applying the brakes when it gets close, but you still need to do the braking and acceleration yourself. It takes some getting used to.

In any FirstWorld setting, one hands valet a $20 or whatever, self-parks and keeps key...and presumably one's car is amongst similar >$150K cars of those who don't want dings/scuffs....if not poss, raises question of why one opts for such a downbeat locale and associated downside risks

Automated self-park is moronic stuff for those who can't drive but choose to park in slums where adjacent cars have far less to lose in any contact....consider why owners of such low-value and/or scuffed-up cars have such cars....and why anyone who can drive (perhaps w/far costlier car) chooses to be so close to such folks, no matter alleged automated pkg tech...common sense prevails over alleged tech engineered by moronic $100K/yr German engineers/marketers who don't understand use-cases of >$100K cars in FirstWorld (i.e., largely US ex-NYC)...

You are just condescending because that five year old car of yours doesn't have that option.

It is an idiotic post. No matter which level of restaurants/hotels you frequent, i have experienced questionable valet service.

Was in LA/Santa Barbara last week. New Audi A8 rental; within 2 days a valet damaged the passenger side rear door/wheel well by backing into some bush/rock. and some idiot keyed the drivers door.

I do like to self park my own cars if possible because I like to keep the car in one piece.

I avoid the valet at all costs.

Has anyone had enough courage to let the car back itself in? I've tried it a few times in my 2015 E and am too chicken shiat to let it complete it. The car always feels like it's too close on the passenger side.

That said, I have let it do the parallel parking thing and it does that quite nicely and almost as quickly as I would.

As far as braking/accelerating, my car does it on its own. I do have to nudge the gas pedal to get it moving, but once I've done that it takes over. I still cover and drag the brake as I don't trust it yet, but so far it's been doing all of that on its own.

I'm with the others here -- valet parking only happens if there are no other options available...which includes parking down the street and hoofing it. I wish the valet mode on these cars would put the car back into Transport mode, ie: no radio, no options, 20-25 mph max, some sort of max on the revs, etc.

I'm with you on this. In my entire life, I have used valet parking maybe ten times. I often have personal items in the car and I don't need the valets pawing around in there. In addition to door dings and bumper scuffs, I worry about them kicking and scratching my door panels and sill plates. I self park whenever possible. I stay away from hotels and resorts that do not offer self parking.

Yes. Yes I have let it back itself into a spot JUST to experience it. I haven't used it other than for showing off the feature, I bought that option specifically for the 360 camera views. That it what I use multiple times a day to protect the low front bumper trim.

I too avoid or "pay-off" valets most places. I always turn on the valet tracking feature in Mbrace too, to ensure I can relax and enjoy the evening.
