Tire Wear and Driving Habits

If the car has 17K miles on it, runflats, 4matic, and the tires are down to "need replacement", is this a sign of normal driving on 4matic and Continental RFTs? I am looking into an 15' s63.

The S63 obviously has a considerably bigger engine and a sportier suspension as well. This is essentially a 4 door sports car. I had a panamera for 2.5 years which is also a 4 door sports car. The average tread life for the tires was 10-12,000 miles on it depending on how you drove it. I'm not certain, but I don't think you can rotate the tires on the S63, like the panamera which leads to a shorter life of the tires. If the previous owner was able to get 17k miles on those tires, I'd say that's pretty good. Now, the cost of replacing those tires are probably going to run you near $2k for all 4 with balancing and mounting.

I don't think Mounting and Road Force will bring it to 2K. Me personally, I usually replace the tires before they get to the "Need replacement". The peace of mind I get for the extra safety knowing the car will perform better (Dry, Rain, Snow (not often) ) with the extra rubber is worth it to me.

P.S. Information from Tire Rack, delivered to your local installer.

Sounds like a good deal on the tires. Mounting and road force will probably run about 30-40 per tire. Still under the $2k I was estimating. I'm not a tire expert...but seems like a good deal.

Just another thought...usually when I would replace all 4 tires on my panamera, I would have it re-aligned as well for multiple reasons. Mainly so the tires will wear the way they should. For porsche, but I'm not sure about mercedes, the alignment also includes aligning the suspension for performance which I'll bet mercedes would do as well. This would cost 250 ish for the Porsche, and would probably be about the same or more on the S63, but would recommend it.

2K is a good estimate. Thank you for the details on the cost, and what needs to be done along with the replacement.

W222 AMG's did not come from the factory with EMT tires. MB calls them EMT's not run flats. Based on my tire wear at 8K miles on my S65 I would say 17K miles indicates normal use, proper inflation and a lot of highway miles on an S63. Mine came from the factory with the Contisport 5P's.

Usually I never do an alignment from factory spec unless
1. Tires are worn improperly.
2. Steering is off.

The reason for this is Most (not all) shops have the Alignment equipment calibrated and can actually bring you out of proper alignment. MB has specific equipment to do alignments on these very expensive / elaborate suspension systems.

Nice ride has a good point. If the tires look worn evenly, then it may not matter. But since you do not know what the driving habits of the previous owner was, or how the car was treated, I would probably do the alignment. In the big scheme of things, the cost will be a a small amount.

I actually meant to say they do NOT have the equipment calibrated. Over time, the equipment needs to be re-calibrated, but if done incorrectly or not at all, you are actually taking a perfectly good alignment and making it bad....
