Heated steering wheel

Hi

I have a new S-Class (2017). I spent the extra money on the warmth and comfort package because that was the only way I could get a heated steering wheel. Does the wood area on the steering wheel really not warm up? The primary touch point of the steering wheel? Someone please tell me this isn't true? My wife has a 2017 Range Rover LWB which came with a heated steering wheel standard and the entire steering wheel, including the wood area heats up.

No Mercedes has ever had heated wood areas on the steering wheels. I assume heating the wood will deteriorate it over time or crack the laquer.

For members interested in the heated wheel, I can confirm that the new 2018 S Class wheel is heated on both the leather and wood portions. This is a change from previous years and a welcome one at that.

Feels like an idiot that got a 17 in June with the ‘18 right around the corner and paid $2600 for the warmth and comfort package that I didn’t want but absolutely wanted a heated steering wheel. More of an idiot that I didn’t know the wood part of the wheel doesn’t heat up. 🤦🏾*♂️🤦🏾*♂️🤦🏾*♂️

I had no idea the entire steering wheel would be heated. There was absolutely no information about it from the dealership or Mercedes and I asked the question repeatedly. Didn’t find out until I tried the heating function after taking delivery on Wednesday. Porsche has been heating wood steering wheels for years! Glad Mercedes decided to make the change.

Can I ask what kind of deal you got? I got roughly $18k off MSRP on my 17’

You did about 10k better in discount. That is always the trouble when you are one of the first to buy in the new model year. I ordered my S in mid July and didn’t have much negotiating room. You certainly got a great deal!

When I was looking for the S, that was one option I wanted bad, only to find out that ONLY THE LEATHER was heated, and I never grabbed the leather when driving, so it was a pointless option. Mercedes has never heated the wood before, which would be very simply to do.

Is there any documentation where Mercedes says this is new for 2018? I'm assuming you are correct, but it is summer and the wheel is hot all over

It was 41 degrees this morning and dark when I tried it. The wood definetly got as warm as the leather grips. The leather grips are smaller this year on the new steering wheel and probably contributed to the decision to heat the wood. No documentation from Mercedes that I know of at this point. Hope I am not dreaming!

Hope you aren't dreaming either, lol. Many manufacturer's have heated wood though for years, while Mercedes never did.

But, for those that really want a heated wheel in their 14-17 S, here you go, lol.
