These are from the September 18, 2017 issue of AutoWeek, in an article about the 2018 S Class. Take a look at the roof and the roof rails. Sure looks like an S63 without the Panorama Roof to me. Obviously, this is a Euro spec car, but still, I’ve never seen a car like this, have you?

I don’t think so, because of two reasons: First, it’s a magazine story about the face lifted 2018 and I don’t think they would have shown a modified car in such a story. Second, on the MB German site, they now show the Pano Roof as being OPTIONAL. This is a change, as all of the long wheelbase models, prior to MY 18 had the Pano as standard.

If pano is optional that explains it...what exactly aren't you sure about?

It’s not that I’m unsure about anything, I just find it curious that after MY14 through MY17 the glass roof is standard equipment and now it is optional. Perhaps they have heard from many that we’re not all in love with the Pano Roof and think it would be better if we had a choice. At any rate, seeing a W222 without the glass roof is quite unusual, wouldn’t you say?

I know, I know, but this really is a different subject. I know that most here won’t care about this, but to me, it’s a crack in the iceberg. Hopefully, the option will make its way across the pond, but I’m not holding my breath.

I know these are just “konfigurator” images, but look at the way the roof rails are treated with the two roofs. I wonder if they really do cut the color off like that, or if the roof rails are body colored all the way to the hood?

I assume these are to identify the differences between full panoramic roof and without panoramic roof option.If that's the case the car above should have come with the panoramic roof whereas the car at the bottom shouldn't have .
