Change default to off of auto start stop?
The 2015 S600 is a truly wonderful car, but one annoyance is the auto stop start. Basically if I forget to turn it off when I get in car I have to do it within a few seconds because of how annoying and jarring it is to have the engine shut off as I'm inching through traffic or moving forward. Also, if I'm stopped for a long time it comes off and on because I always need the AC on high enough that it won't leave the engine off more than a few seconds.
It would be a little nicer if I could get the system to default to off when I first start the car rather than having to press the button every single time.

Don't think you can do that but I know with my car I generally just drive with it in sport mode and sport made stays on even after I restart the car in my 2015 S550. In sport mode the auto stop start feature is not active.

Sport mode disables the ECO start/stop but there are 3rd party options that keep ECO turned off. Brabus makes one and so does Midcity Engineering...

Would these 3rd party options void the warranty?

In 30+ years of owning cars the single most common item that failed in my hands was the starter. It is a stupid and annoying idea and I will take it off as soon as I get delivery of my S tomorrow. One way or the other, that goes. And that damn button should be OFF by default.

Someone with more knowledge chime in and clear up my confusion.

Got the car on Saturday. I need to put there that in the W222 is not as annoying as it was in the C or GLA (both loaners, not owned by us). The weather is too cold so no way to see total impact, but in two days I got myself both cursing and shutting it down, as well as not even noticing that it was turning the car on-off. In the smaller and not as well insulated cars, it was intolerable, but in the S, almost tolerable.
I would not put my money that it saves 10% of anything. Maybe 1 to 2%. Hopefully I will be able to get rid of it and not see this crap for 2-3 years. By then, I may trade the Tesla on a electric S class

I dunno if I'd trust my car to one of those things, sounds good in theory but I wonder if they really do anything? Nice print job on it though, looks pretty official.

it still uses the starter but it’s a different type of starter system designed for the extra stress. The engines bearings and of course the engines oil is better than yesteryear. The climate system has sensors to start the engine when more a/c is required. This feature can save 5 to 10 percent in fuel usage so I see no reason not to use it. To me it feels fairly seamless and does not bother me nor does cylinder shut down even though you can feel a little increased vibration.

No, the 2015 S550 does not, I should have been more clear I was referring to my 2018 E63 AMG. The 2018 S560 also has the cyl shutdown. The S550 does really good on gas on the highway regardless of not having it, it just glides along and I'm seeing around 26MPG average on the highway. Pretty amazing for such a big car.

I see about 26 mpg on the highway as well, 19 mpg all around. Without benefit of cylinder deactivation, that’s pretty darn good.
I don’t mind the auto shut-down - until it shuts off at a four way stop, or when I stop the car before reversing into my garage.
If I could have more control over when it shuts off, now that would be beneficial. My thought is that it could be activated (once at a complete stop) by pressing extra firmly on the brake pedal, thus shutting down. In another example, if I’m pulling up to a red light that I know is going to turn green in a couple of seconds, I could choose to not shut it down simply by applying normal braking pressure at the stop. Same goes at a four way stop.
i don’t think the auto shut off system is intuitive enough, at least as far as the 2015 model is concerned.

I normally have music playing so I hardly even notice it. I actually do seem to find if I apply light pressure to the brake it is less likely to activate. Interesting.

I actually like the auto stop feature, but I could take it or leave it. I usually stay in S mode so this feature is rarely an issue. It amazes me how well they have it figured out. It starts so quickly I almost don't even notice it.

Maybe because I have the S600 with 12 cylinders shutting down, but it's incredibly jarring and annoying, especially on a car that's supposed to be extremely smooth.
Obviously it's only 1 button so it's not the most horrible thing in the world, but it's a slight annoyance that every single time I get in the car I have to push it. I don't see how anyone could put up with having the engine shutting off and on as your sitting in traffic or stopped at a light. The worst is in the crawling traffic where every time I come to a stop the engine shuts off and then right back on again as I need to move forward. With the AC demands where I live the engine won't stay off for long even if you're stopped for several minutes. Just a complete waste.

Most annoying feature EVER! I drive rental cars quite a bit and this has got to be the stupidest most annoying demonic feature ever installed in any car. There is a shudder in every single one I've ever driven that has auto on/off.... Leave to government regs to force crap like this on us! After all, they do know what's best for us. Interested in this product if it really works and is safe to use on the MBZ,
