How to use Active Lane Change/Lane Keep?

Hi everyone, we just picked up a 2015 S550e with Premium package, Driving Assistance package, and AMG package.

The Distronic+ works well, as it can stop and slow down, etc on the freeway, but I can't seem to get the Lane Keep Assist and Lane Change Assist to work. Both of the features are on, since I have pressed the buttons and made sure that they're lit up and the dashboard does confirm that it's on.

But when I try to change lanes by signaling, the car does nothing. When I let go of the wheel just driving down the highway, the car doesn't keep me in lane, it just drifts apart. Is there something else I'm missing? Or maybe it needs to be calibrated? Since I did pick this up pre-owned. Any ideas? Thanks!

When you engage Distronic+ do you see a green steering wheel icon at the bottom of the display in front of you? When you are idling do you see a red lit LED on the small black button with the steering wheel, in the row of black buttons to the left of the steering wheel? If the latter is not lit red, press it and it should light up...that is what turns distronic ON.

First off, the Lane Change Assist is new for 2018. Not an option for 2015. Are you trying the Lane Keep Assist when the Distronic + is engaged? It will not work without the radar sensing cruise control ( Distronic ) engaged.

Ah got it. I do have the green steering wheel. So I guess I am trying to use Lane Keep Assist then. And yes, I tried to use Lane Keep Assist when Distronic+ is engaged.

I read about the car pulling you back into your lane when there is a car in your blind spot and you don't have your blinker on. Is this only active when radar cruise control is engaged?

The 2015 doesn't have lane change assist. The lane keep assist is only designed to provide mild steering pressure to keep the car in a fairly straight lane. It isn't designed to fully take the car around a corner OR prevent you from changing lanes when blind spot is active.

Looks like MB is behind the learning curve on this one. Saw a Cadillac commercial last night announcing totally autonomous steering on some of their higher end cars. No hands on the steering wheel at all....

From what I hear Cadillac has a very good system. The original W222 felt like an unfinished product, the newer ones are better but are level 2 either way. In terms of autonomy I believe Audi has the most advanced system (level 3) out there but has not applied it due to legal questions, i.e.in case of an accident is the driver or the car company responsible? In case of Audi in Germany they are planning to be the responsible party.

That said, having to touch the steering wheel is not directly related to the sophistication.

When the green steering wheel is lit, LKA SHOULD be active, and should keep you in your lane regardless of other cars or your blinker, IF the lane is well marked (or your car is in traffic and following another) and is on a straight or GENTLE curve. If it isn't doing that it sounds like you should go for a drive with a tech to show that it doesn't work.

The only problem...it is a Cadillac. To each his own I guess.

On my 17 SL the system constantly corrects itself and slightly zig zags the car back and forth even on straight roads and having the steering wheel move back and forth every second or so is nerve wracking. I have turned that part off and use everything else.

But in NY you cant use your cellphone either. ItIf more cars had this more texters would stay in their lane. Whether you agree or disagree with texting and driving you have to admit this helps with distracted drivers.

Yes. I’ve never mentioned this before, but the lane keeping on my 2015 S550 was a bit of a pain, always seeming to fight me as I was driving. On my 2018, the system is much improved, to the point where I don’t even notice it.

'16 gle63s coupe... had to turn off off the active steering assist, kept pulling side to side... and if you actually try to steer it fights you...

forget what this was called but i get a graphic showing my car going over the lane marker and it brakes and jerks me back in... little too touchy.... after a few tractor trailers moving into my lane and me slowly moving over than lane assist or whatever jerking me back into the truck, i turned it off...

love the distronic cruise... works real well..
