Ceramic brake pads and rotors

Just received order from Brakeworld.com. Ordered the Italia Ceramic brake pads. Also ordered rotors from FCP Euro. Both sites were recommended on this forum. I can’t wait to get them installed. The brake dust on the OEM brake pads are ridiculous and gets dirty after one drive when you wash your car.

I always bought Akeebonos for my vehicles but for some reason they do not offer them for my MY15. Will check back after install to let yall know how it went, and any issues i may have encountered. I dont expect to have any issues as all the talks on this forum say these pads are great with no dust.

I will be ordering rotors shortly form FCP, I have the same IC Pads, just waiting for some free time to do the swap. Great choice of pads, they also come with all new hardware, nice touch!. You should also consider using Reload on your rims or have them Ceramic coated. Will also help to keep the wheels clean, brake dust does not stick as much and is easier to clean off with just soap and water, no chemicals. I mix the Relaod 50/50 with distilled water. After a wash, light spray on car and rims, wipe with MF towel, smooth as glass. Safe for rubber, glass etc. Makes the trim look new matt black. Its also great to soak your wiper blades in the stuff, then just wipe dry.

Let us know how the pads are. Good luck...

Installed pads and rotors.

Had pads and rotors installed this weekend. So far so good. No noise. Clean braking and no brake dust. Will drive for another month or so and update again.

Man, this is good to hear! The brake dust thing is a major killer on my gloss black wheels. It takes me 40 minutes to clean the wheels and a 2 mile drive to kill them. Need to replace my pads ASAP.

Do you think I'll have any issues replacing just the pads and not the rotors?

Hard to say DC450. Have someone look at your rotors to see how thick they are. Last thing you wanna do is put pads on and them need rotors in a few months. I just replaced all since I've only had car a few months and I figured pads alone would have outlasted the rotors.

So many people think black wheel will not matter wit the dust, but it does.

Maybe with matte black wheels not so much but with gloss black it does... big time!

I am looking for a source of ceramic brake pads for my 2018 S450. Cleaning up all the brake dust is getting to be quite a chore! So far I have found nothing! Maybe because the model is new this year?
I see lots of other S class pads available but none for S450. Has anyone found a source?

I just confirmed they have the correct ceramic brake pads for my car! I sent them an email and they said the web site did not show the S450 but the brake pad set for the S560 (Standard Brakes) is the same.
I will be upgrading my brakes very soon!

Until I can sell my car, I had to get my brake pads exchanged. Computer said to change them. I couldn't believe after on 36K miles. Make sure they don't con you into new rotors. Mine only had about 2mm of wear on the rotors and that is well within safety limits so I finally found an honest mechanic that agreed and had just the pads replaced at $800. Understand that if you go with porcelain, your rotors will thin out quickly. If I end up keeping my car for a long time, I will change my pads myself. It is so easy to do.

I am about ready to replace my pads as well. I am interested in how long you have to go before noticing brake dust on the wheels as well as how easy to clean up when washing the car.
On my last wash I used a new product, for me at least. (Chemical Guys Wheel Guard Wheel And Rim Wax) So far the wheels are clean looking but I'm not sure how long it will last as well as how often I need to re-apply.

Update on ceramic pads

While i am only on week 2, after replacing rotors and pads, i have a couple comments/questions. First: the pads and rotors are great. No noise, vibrations, or anything. Wheels stay clean. I installed week befor last Saturday. Washed car the following Monday. Yesterday made 1 week since car washed, and not a spec of dirt on the wheels. I have droiven approximately 150 miles since putting everything on and washing the car.

Question: on one of my rear rotors, i noticed that half of the pad does not seem to be touching the rotor. I can tell because the rotors i bought had the grey coating on them, that comes off once you apply brakes. I went back to where i had them installed, and they looked and said nothing is wrong. Said that i need to keep driving and eventually the pad and rotor will even out. They also said because my brakes are electronic, you can’t install pads incorrectly. Once pads are seated in caliper, it cant move. (Anyone ever heard of that). He also says you have to have the special scanner or some type of tool to take the calipers off. If you dont you can mess up the calipers. I’m now looking at him like, ok with all that; when will my brakes make full contact on it’s rotors.

He looked at underside of the same rotor and it was making full contact as all the grey coating is off the caliper. So i have 3 1/2 wheels making full contact. Is this normal and should i be concerned about anything? Like i said, the car brakes lovely and smooth with no issues. I just hate seeing that one back rotor with half the rotor having grey coating still on it. Looks like it’s only a half of pad on my darn rear wheel. Lol

That just doesn't sound right! You gotta hope they did it correctly and it will eventually seat properly.

I think you are OK. I bet after 1000 miles the pads and rotors will have evened out and the braking surfaces will be even. Probably just a rotor slightly milled wrong. As long as it "laps" in and you're not getting any shuddering and the rotors have an even surface, you'll probably have nothing to worry about. Just keep an eye on the contact surfaces. I am trying to think of something safe that could be painted or applied to the rotor surface so that you could take it down the road, brake a few times, then go out and look at where the marking material is rubbed off.

I don't buy it. Rear and Front surfaces should be with the same pressure. To install the rear pads you must go into the settings on the display and have the rear calipers park (retract) in order to remove and install new pads. If they did not do this, they may have damaged the rear caliper or not installed the pad correctly. There is equal force on both pads on the rotor. They messed something up, go back before they ruin your new pads and rotor.... That coating should be gone within a few miles. Did you ever look at your rotors when the car was not driven for a while, and they have that light rust oxidation on them,,,, Drive 1 block and its gone....

while I am no brake expert, I have done a bmw before that did the same thing and after a few miles they did even out. Its very hard to seat the pad wrong.... Not saying you cant but you would have to be retarded. I havent done the s class yet.

You didn't do the dustfree pads yet on the S?

I stand corrected! I did my w221 with Akebonos, I have not done the w222 yet. My car gets washed often so my brake dust is never to bad.

Thanks guys for all the comments. I’m not experiencing any braking issues at all. It seems to be working fine. Just haven’t settled yet. The software being mentioned must be what he was telling me they had to use to do the pads. He said if you didn’t use and try to manually take off calipers, i would be needing new calipers. I will drive another week or so and see if it went away before i go back again. If i have to go back, i think i will tell them remove pad and re-install. I remember him also saying once pads are seated in rotor, they cant move so that is why he is saying the pad needs to settle in with the rotor. I guess it has something to do with not all rotors and pads are perfectly round, or flat respectively. We shall see.

Do you have any updates on your brake upgrade? Today I ordered the Ceramic pads from BrakeWorld. Been less than a month and my wheels are filthy! I am also counting on the fact that ceramic last longer and causes less wear on the roters.

Ceramic brake pads and rotors update

Pads and rotors are doing a great job. Literally no dust or dirt. One of my pads still have not settled in with rotor so I have half of rotor still with Grey paint that came on them when new. It's one of the rear pads. I spoke with several other mechanics and they said to give it time. Rear pads do less than 25% of braking so any settling needed will take longer than that of the front pads and rotors. I have no braking issues. In fact the braking seems more responsive than when I had stock pads on them.

My rotors are OEM. So I'm giving it a little while longer before I go back to shop I had put them on.

Other than that I am very pleased with them. Only time I get dirt on rims is when I drive in rain and that is minimal too.
