Let's hear some opinions of a 222 with a 6 v.s. an 8. I recently used a 2019 S Class loaner with a 6 and I was very impressed with the zip. Yes, yes, yes I know a 6 can't compete with an 8 but, again, it was pretty darn good. Anyone else have any thoughts?
It's the ultimate luxury car, to maximize that luxury feel, the car needs a "wafting" ability and a V8 or even better, a V12, with the high torque, offers that in spades vs a 6.
i have the 6 (2018 s450 4matc). on a 1000m road trip as we speak. no wanting for additional power at all. and i got 33mpg at 75 mpg with the air conditioning on full tilt and fully laden with sh*t my wife makes me bring on these trips and then never uses. no complaints. except for the aforementioned sh*t.
I have a 2018 S450 and there is plenty of power for my style of driving. I also get around 33 mpg on trips. I don't baby the car and I don't hot rod it either.
We can't decide this for you. I would never buy a 6 cylinder S Class but that's just me - never. Do what you think is best for you. LOVES me my 8 cylinder. I'm sure I never use it at even half it's potential but I just like knowing it's there.
For me the question comes down to is the v8 noticeably more refined than the V6 from a smoothness / quietness standpoint? Which is why IMHO an S63 would be non-value added over an S560.

I do care about fuel mileage but not to compromise the experience of my S class. I am consistently amazed at the fuel mileage from todays technology. My 7.0 Zo6 vette can get 26 mpg!! Insane. Impressive and I appreciate it, but it's not the entire reason I bought the car. I seem to get 22-24 mpg in my S class and I am good with that for what else it does. IT MOVES! Its so smooth and fast when I want it. I wouldn't give that up for better mileage. My W221 routinely got 27 mpg and at first I noticed the W222 is not as good. Well.........I got over it fast. This car is much faster, smooth as silk and overall a better driving experience. I have other cars in the household that are for fuel mileage and another for towing and Home Depot..........this car is just right for what it is -, luxury, performance and comfort. I would never pay up for an S class and not have it all. An S should not have a 6. Its not what the car is about. But if someone has one car and it suits his needs and is happy with a 6....God bless him!

In fact, as I reflect on this topic the writing’s on the wall. The v12 is out and with AMG squeezing more and more power and torque out of 6 cylinders and even 4cylinders engines, how many of you will continue to crow about their how wonderful their 8 is when you get waxed by one of these smaller AMG units. The sun is setting on our old ways and ideas, of power only coming from displacement. I look forward to the future and the new ideas.
The future is fukkked, milenials dont give a sheet about any cars. the only ones left are us!! enjoy driving your own cars while u can. That said 6 doesnt belong in an s class.

Your first sentence is lets hear some opinions? Thats all it is. Nothing directed. I agree the 6 cylinders of today with turbos can get most anyone to respect them. I think my wifes 4 cyl turbo VW would beat my 70 GTO in the quarter mile!

The S-class is pushing up towards 5,000 pounds.
Impressive and I appreciate it, but it's not the entire reason I bought the car. I seem to get 22-24 mpg in my S class and I am good with that for what else it does.
I get 24-25 MPG in my S-600 typically. I got 30 MPG from Flagstaff to Kingman (which, admittedly, is downhill)
After 18,000 miles the unaltered car's MPG gauge registers 20.5 MPG (city + highway)

I am aware it can get better, but you are driving ALOT nicer than I am! On some road trips I put the effort in and it is very impressive for such a large heavy car with a V8. I enjoy it and put my foot into when ever I feel like it and I still get 23 mpg which is fantastic. Our lowest speed here on the Florida TP is 80mph. Go any slower and you'll get run over!! LOL
My 2011 Zo7 is a C6 generation. 3325 lbs with me in it. The C7 Zo7 with driver and gas is over 3800 lbs 3523lbs car// 20 gallons@ 6lbs= 120lbs/ 175lb driver= 3818lbs. I track against these guys and am faster due to weight with less HP. ( probably my superior driving skills too) LOL Just joking.....

The new small engines will certainly outperform current V8 or V12 in the near future but will never equal them in true luxury of smoothness, sound (or lack of it), waftability, and total lack of vibrations.
Unfortunately, MB succumbed to all the new upcoming environmental laws and decided to discontinue the V12 for the S-Class, leaving it temporarily in Maybach only.

I don't want to constantly feel the downshift and high revs of the engine as I'm trying to pass. I want oodles of torque on reserve at low RPMs to just allow me to pass without hearing a peep from the engine.

Modern V6 is great! Exactly how you put it, zippy and smooth. With that said, I rather take a V8 in an S-class, knowing I have more power than I need and it sounds better. I never enjoyed engine sounds below V8.

33mpg on freeways with the S450 is impressive.
You will transition into an electric car easily. Its everything you want.
The six that the S Class should have is the inline six. It is a shame that Mercedes did not see fit to replace the V6 in the US W222 with the inline like they have done is Europe.

I think the blame lies with the backward thinking executives at MB Of America. The American executives were opposed to early adoption of the inline 6. Stupid.

With the new 223 I read all the drivetrains will be electrified; I think we may get the inline 6 plus 48v system as the low end variant, maybe they will adopt the European nomenclature, S500, and upgrade the high end to the S580 like with the new GLS.
