Assistance/ideas needed with creak/rattle noise behind instrument panel.

Hello. I have a 14' S63 and it has a rattle/creak noise that to me sounds like directly behind the instrument panel and inline with the steering column.

Lubed up the steering shaft and new grease around shaft boot.

Also, removed the panel under the column and insulated everything I could see. Removed cowl panel under the hood and insulated all hard lines that seemed like they could make noise by the brake booster.

Per suggestion of another member here, lubed up the inner wheel housing splash guards where they meet the fender.

Still, have this persistent creak/rattle. Does not seem to be suspension. Sounds like interior.

Probably more prominent on roads that put the chassis into torsional load rather than hearing it over bumps, which makes me think it's at a mounting point of something more rigid than what it's mounted to rather than something loose.

Any suggestions on things I can try other than a molotov cocktail?

Thanks!

Well if you have a head up display check to be sure the plastic cover is not rattling. I had this problem and it was fixed with felt around the screen.

You beat me to it. I think my 2019 has the problem but it is so miniscule that I'm not going to bother with it unless it becomes worse.

Also try to see if the dash, aka "firewall", bearing for the steering intermediate shaft is not the culprit. This has been mentioned on several vehicle models on this site. Generally happens only when turning the steering wheel at low vehicle speeds and large steering angles.

P.S. My dealer did not cover that under CPO.

Thanks guys. No hud. Does not seem to be related to steering movement but I will give that a look.

Interior noise locations can be very deceiving, I had a noise in a new 300CE back in 1992 that I swore was from the dash and drove me crazy, it turned out to be something in the sun visor and I only found it by accident/perfect timing when I when to pull it down and the noise immediately stopped.

I have hud and have a rattle when going over bumpy pavement like when they strip of a layer to repave. I'm still under warranty but in the last year so have been hesitant to take into the dealer. It's definitely coming from the panel that the hud is in. Been tempted to pry this off carefully to see what's going on. It has a rattle if you tap on it too. Does anyone know if it's held in place by the hidden fasteners? If so I have some plastic tools to pry off to have a look.

Ray I had the rattle in my Maybach and took it to dealer three times with no fix. I ended up fixing it myself. You need to buy the Thick (like 2/16) felt with the sticky stuff on one side. You then take a pry tool and gently pry the surround panel on the dash up to remove it. Once you have this panel out you apply the felt all the way around to the hole where the HUD screen goes through. By applying it carefully it is invisible once reinstalled.

What happens is the felt applied to the panel comes in contact with the clear plastic HUD lens and slightly dampens it or adds a bit of pressure to it so it will no longer rattle anymore.

PS I did have to revisit the felt ONE more time about 10000 miles later to add a bit more because the noise came back slightly but that has been about 40000 miles age.

Agree completely. I could be way off here, that's just where it -seems- to be to me.

I'm going to pull out the instrument panel and see if anything reveals itself.

Update on this, ^deceiving it was.

Removed the cluster, insulated everything with self adhesive felt and foam. -No change

Took off panel on firewall behind engine, found heater control valve tapping on firewall, insulated -No change

Started looking at other areas and the noise while sounding to me like coming from the center of the dash was actually the storage compartment at the front/lower drivers seat.

Lubricated the latch and hinges, added foam underneath end cap that clips on = no more thoughts of parking it on train tracks
