2014 Key upgrade to 2018+ Key fob!

I did a conversion on my 2014 W222 to 2018 looks inside and out.
Now I am going to have my old key upgrade to a 2018+ key AMG style:

What's involved? Are you going to install an NFC reader for dead-key battery starting since the new key doesn't support the IR physical handshake? Or just take your chances? And isn't the communications between the EIS and key different? Any other modules need replacing?

I don't know what's involved! I just send my old key and money to my friend in Asia. But I am guessing they make a PCB work the same as the old key, and the shape will fit on the new key case. Because the button location also different between the old and new keys. They need my old key to duplicate another old key but with a new case. So mainly for looks only!

I ordered a brand new key from my local Mercedes dealer a few months ago for $400 and programming for another $200! But this new key cost me a lot less than that with a genuine Mercedes AMG key case.

That's a tremendous amount of trouble to go through just to have a different looking key. Also , why is the fingernail on your pinky finger so long??? LOL

Just don't lose the old key. If you didn't understand my earlier question, note that if the keyless entry and start doesn't work (perhaps because of a dead fob battery), there's a failsafe mechanism. The old way is to pop out the start button and insert the rectangular part of the key into the dash. It works without a key battery because there's an infrared-based key validation that uses only the car's power. The new way is to place the dead key on an NFC pad in the console. Near-field communication works by using inductive power from the pad, and doesn't need any key power. (This is how NFC point of sale credit card taps work.)

So the new key won't work with the old dash, which means any keyless start problem will leave you stranded unless you have an old key that will mate with the car's dash.

Thanks for the information! That's why I order a spare key a few months ago from Mercedes dealer just in case.

Why bother changing the key type. Mine never leaves my pocket so it is never seen by anyone except myself unless I use valet parking.

It looks better. They should have redesigned the key when the W222 came out, but of course they used an already OLD key design. I am sick of looking it. Glad this is a option.

After seeing some of the hardcore(^) answers here, I tend to agree with you It's just a fawking key LOL! As long as it can sit in my pocket I'd consider myself satisfied.

I’m in love with the new key also. I’d love to know how your friend in Asia pulled this off, and how much something like this costs. I’m interested in getting one!

The cost is about $400, and you will need to send your old key to them so they can copy all the information from the old key to the new key! I just sent out my old key and still wait for the new key. Because of this COVID-19, the shipping time will take much longer than before! ( one month vs. two weeks)

Can they only programme new keys? or could you buy a second hand one off eBay and send that for converting?

No, remember the old key and new key use different system so you can not copy the old key to the new key !

This key upgrade looks great! How’s the functionality of the new key fob? Do you have any issues using it as opposed to the old key?

A little off-topic, but I heard that after the facelift (2018+) the keyless entry system was "upgraded" so it is less easy to open by car thieves (key shuts down after x minutes, and can be forced-off when required [press close twice], so no "metal cage of Farraday" is needed to store the keys at night!). Anybody who can confirm? I read it a whie ago, but can not find the source anymore.

After sending the key to upgrade they then have a register that makes them able to steal the car when ever they want.
They wil always find the car and steal it.
They don't need a key, but can sell the file to whoever wants to pay for it.

Agree, pretty pointless IMO. Just a key.
