2017 S63 Coupe vs 2018 S560 Coupe

Hello,

I'm interested in an S coupe, and I understand that it was tweaked for 2018 with the new S560 that is very fast for non-AMG.

What are peoples' opinions on 2016/2017 S63 AMG coupe versus a 2018/2019 S560 coupe?

It's meant to be a daily driver to replace M6 gran coupe (other car is Ferrari 488)

From reading the W222 section, the suspensions will be nothing at all like each other between 63 and 560. Apples and oranges.

By default I would take the S63 but price, color, condition and options matter as much as the engine.

The 2017 S63 will still be quicker (3.8 sec to 60) vs 4.5 sec. on the 560. The S560 is somewhat floaty but the 9 speed transmission will be smoother than the 7 speed Multi clutch from the AMG (AMG switched to 9 speed MCT in 2018). Love both engines. There is a little bit of eye candy on the rear LED lighting on the newer ones and updated tech on the inside but the coupes are surprisingly similar. Apple CarPlay on the S560...

Both have beautiful interiors and the greenhouse of the coupes are beautiful. No B-pillar. Make sure to get a exclusive Nappa interior to get the full leather/Alcantara treatment.

Personally, I have to admit would get either a 2018+ S63 or a S65. Fantastic cruiser that is usually fully decked out and due to depreciation not much more than the S63.

In a heartbeat I would go with the S63 Coupe over the S560 but that's just me. You'd really need to see them both and decide for yourself. I would never own an S560 since I've had 3 S63's but others would never want an S63. You can read response after response but again, in the end, just pick one and go with it. If you could get a different one... an S63 from 2018, it's then got all the updates but it would be MUCH more expensive. But hey, it's Covid, live for today ;o). Tomorrow may not be here... Have you seen the steering wheel on the 2018 vs the 2016/17? Now that's what I'm talkin' about.

Chris Harris owns(ed?) a S63 coupe. To me that says a lot but I have very favorable reviews of the S560 coupe.

Tough choice....wonderful result no matter what.

I think the 0-60 of the old 63 and the new 560 is closer than that. Like 3.7 vs 4.0.

Not really. The S560 coupe is listed at 4.5 seconds and it feels about as quick as that. We have driven the S560 cabriolet (same performance) for a couple thousand miles in Germany and Europe and while being a fast car it definitely isn't a 4 second car.

If high speed acceleration is important to you, get the older 63. However the 580 is not far off off the line, much smoother and more comfortable, and the tech is 10 steps ahead. A significant upgrade.

What tech in particular?

We have driven all non-AMG/AMG S-coupes over the years, pre & post facelift, and the only one that truly impressed performance-wise was the 2018+ S63

For me I would go with the 2018 560 as it's plenty fast, has the tech upgrades and those awesome taillights. Either is a good choice in the end. Not many RWD based pillarless coupes these days.

Upgraded the OS. It’s a significant change. The old one had confusing menus on the top and bottom, and could only use the right 2/3rds of the screen for most things, the new one has a much more logical layout, Apple CarPlay/android auto, upgraded maps, and is generally much easier and nicer to use. A totally different system. It also has a newer and much more customizable digital instrument cluster and now the piece is all glass instead of having plastic surround with bottoms between the screens.

Just FYI. Coupes are AWD.

I misunderstood your comment You meant the 560. The 580 is the new S-Class (sedan only)

Oh no! I did mean the 560, my bad. I think I’ve spent too much time in the GLS and new 223 forum!

I think I've decided I want the S63 in Magno Gray and Bengal Red. Now let's see if I can find it.

Bengal Red? I'd expand my search options if I were you... these cars don't come up for sale that often and in Bengal Red interior? I don't think that's going to happen. Never even heard of it actually... but... good luck man!

Post pics when you to one! Love Magno colors; we used to have a Night Black Magno E63s. The paint is hard and durable and looks fantastic; the only caveats that owners should be aware of (without PPF) is no carwash and waxes (ever) and no fixing of rock chips/small nicks without a re-spray...
Still totally worth it IMO

Not to hijack the thread, but how long ago did you get rid of the E63? What did you replace it with?

I got rid of the car almost a year ago and replaced it with a BMW M8 Competition coupe. The AMG's suspension was a bit too firm for my wife's back...
