Dashcam Install: Rear Camera Location

Hey guys-

Having my dashcam installed tomorrow. I placed the front camera no problem, but what about the back camera? I dont see a totally obvious place where it will be out of sight but still unmolested by the rear shade.

I have a Thinkware F770. It fits nicely at the top center of the rear window. The screen is just far away enough from the rear window glass to ride above the rear dashcam. Your rear camera may have different dimensions but the F770 definitely works.

Mines a Thinkware F800 Pro. Thats where I put it. Its really the only place you can put it where it doesnt interfere with the shade, other than say at the base of the window on the parcel shelf or something. I placed the cameras last night and its at the shop being wired up right now.

Crappy pic but here is rear cam install on our old S-Class. The Blackvue rear camera fits perfectly on top and it not affected by the rear screen and thus invisible from the inside. We have the Thinkware dash cams now (U1000's) and if memory serves, the mount of the rear cam be be a bit taller than the Blackvue's. Still think that the shade will not interfere. Good luck!

Not quite as slick an install as on my LS460L because of the large camera housings around the mirror, but looks fine.

Thank You! Any issues with GPS with the unit being on the left, the cutout is on the right side of the mirror for EZ-PASS and Radar Detectors..

That location definitely interferes with the GPS. A similar mount on my own 2018 S560 can take up to 15 minutes to acquire GPS signal. Once it locks into GPS, it's usually good to go for the whole day no matter how many times I stop and turn the car off. Same location mount on my 2017 SL550, GPS locks on immediately. Both cars are kept inside a garage. The metallic coating on the S560 is definitely a problem for GPS. The 2021 S Class with the OEM electronic toll transponder eliminates the windshield mounting signal blocking.

Surprisingly, not really. It takes it a couple minutes to connect to GPS, but once it has it, it seems to keep it.

GPS data is crucial for a dash cam for accurate speed calculation and exact geo location tracking. It maybe helpful to check the actual footage itself to see if you have the info is good as the GPS needs to lock onto multiple satellites for accuracy...

If you end up having GPS issues, just move it to the other side of the mirror. The windshield has a cutout in the infrared coating there.

that spot has the V1 radar locator in my cars.... the other spot on the lower glass has my toll tag..... if i wanted to install a front camera what options are left?
i thought about a front grill custom glass box.

I was totally unaware of the large area at the very bottom of the windshield until 6 months ago. Had been using the area at the top, to the right of the rearview mirror for our toll device (that is also blocked by 90% of the windshield). My dashcam is located to the left of the rearview mirror can take an aggravatingly long time to acquire the GPS signal. If I leave my S Class outside, the GPS stays locked out but when I pull it into the garage it usually takes its time re-acquiring the GPS signal. My SL has the identical dashcam, mounted in the same location as the S Class, but no GPS problems because the SL does not seem to have the same metallic properties in the windshield glass.

When I get around to it, I'll relocate my DashCam to the top right of the windshield and then move my toll sticker to the bottom center of the windshield. Kind of a hassle to move the dashcam because it's hardwired. I a huge fan of the new electronic toll transponder that is OEM on the 2021 S Class.

I've checked the footage, it seems to hang onto the GPS signal just fine...

Could just be the Thinkware F770 has weaker GPS reception. We have 3 identical F770 systems installed in or cars. I have moved the receivers between all 3 cars but every unit works worse when in the S Class. I can live with it as the video and sound are excellent 100% of the time.

Sometimes the GPS locks on immediately but most of the time its 10-20 minutes before it connects.
