Question on Wheels

Hi, I am new here and just picked up a 2017 S550 4Matic. It came with the sports package so I have the staggered 19in AMG wheels. I realize I can't rotate the tires but the dealer told me I should not rotate side to side either. I forget his specific reasoning but he said do not. My friend has a set of AMG 10 spoke wheels with summer performance tires that I might switch out just to mix things up. Does that mean I have to make sure I mark the Right and Left tires for the future so I don't mix them up when I put them back on? Do I need to be worried about putting the new wheels on in the same position as they were or am I just overthinking this

Thanks!

Anthony

What is the accepted rotation pattern for directional tires?
Rotate your unidirectional tires Since unidirectional tires are meant to roll only in one direction, they must stay on the same side of the vehicle. When it's time to rotate them, simply swap the front and rear driver-side tires. Do the same for the passenger-side tires [source: Tire Rack].

If you do simply mark each tire with which axle it came from. If you don't pay attention to the directional arrows on each tire when you put them back on..

Thanks for the note! Unfortunately my rear tires are bigger than the front so switching front to back won't work. Maybe I can't rotate at all which is OK. Just wondering what issues may come up if I mount a new set of wheels and tires that have already been driven on another car. Do they need to be in the same location as they were before.

Thanks again!

But you can't do the Tire Rack's suggestion with a staggered setup, of course.

Are the tires on your car directional? They will be marked as such with an arrow on the sidewall. If so, that will ensure that you re-mount correctly; the arrow should point to the front of the car.

If your tires aren't directional, you can rotate side-to-side.

Good question I will have to look closer. They are Continental Pro Contact GX SSR. And of course if the new tires/wheels that I am mounting are Directional, they would need to be in the same spot.

Thanks again!

I don't think those Contis are directional.

I have been driving for over 40 years and had so many different vehicles, driven maybe 1.5 million miles and never ever rotated the tyres . Maybe this is more popular in the USA ??

Yes with a staggered set-up you're kinda SOL as far as rotating.

Correct, staggered sizes with directional tires are non-rotatable.

It is possible to rotate directional tires (with a symmetric tread design) side-to-side by taking them off the wheels and re-installing them on the opposite side wheels. But that's a lot of work.
