On to the next one (purchase advice wanted!)...

I just sold my 2015 S550 (124K MSRP, new brakes/rotors, wipers, cabin/engine filters) for 43.5K, pretty happy about that. Why did I sell the best car I've ever owned? The sole purpose of getting a facelifted 2018+ S560. I test drove one a while back and I want the 9G, newest COMMAND, faster engine, etc etc etc. I'm going to be spending around 75-85K for this car. My "must haves" are exclusive leather, sport package, warmth and comfort package, and Burmester 3d. Nothing crazy rare besides Burmester 3d, that's pretty tough to find. I have a big chunk to put down but would prefer to finance some of the car through MB. So...

Do I wait for the W223 to hit the states? Will it make a huge impact on the facelifted W222's?
Do I wait for MB to offer the "first two months payments" for CPO vehicles again? Or since it's only $1500 (combined) should that not matter much? Right now it's 1.99% for 36 months, does it get better than that? Are there certain times of the year where they do even better promotions?
COVID is rocking the used car industry in a bad way, prices are higher than ever, do I wait even longer? Or is the S class kind of insulated from huge market impacts because its such a high priced niche vehicle?

Any other advice or feedback is appreciated.

Good luck finding that car. I hope you can be flexible about dealers, and road trip outside of your area....

Good question about the W223. I don't know the answer but my guess is that it won't be a huge impact on used car prices until the W223 is itself available used, as it seems unlikely that buyers are cross-shopping W223 and CPO '18/'19 S560s.

Unsolicited advice: try to get a '19 if only because the traffic service works. Everyone with an '18 or earlier lost realtime traffic because of the underlying service expiring or some BS like that. That's the only thing that frustrates me about mine.

Do I wait for the W223 to hit the states? The W223 interior is hideous, to me.

Will it make a huge impact on the facelifted W222's? I don't care to compare a car I enjoy with one I could not stand.

Do I wait for MB to offer the "first two months payments" for CPO vehicles again? You snooze you loose.

Or since it's only $1500 (combined) should that not matter much? Less than 2%

Right now it's 1.99% for 36 months, does it get better than that? Pay cash and is 0% for however long you own it.

Are there certain times of the year where they do even better promotions? probably

COVID is rocking the used car industry in a bad way, prices are higher than ever, do I wait even longer? See #3

Or is the S class kind of insulated from huge market impacts because its such a high priced niche vehicle? If you found the car you want, waiting for (various things to happen) easily goes wrong.

Thanks folks, as for distance, not an issue. I'll ship the right car 3000 miles if I have to. And yes, you snooze you lose. I missed out on a 145k MSRP 2018 S560 listed for 85k, sold in a day. Also cash is not an option, I have some bucks laying around but not 80 grand!

Well, this isn't the financial advice forum, so I will wish you the best with your search and many happy miles!! Put up pictures in the pinned thread when you land the car!

The W223 coming out will drive inventory, since W222 owners who may upgrade will do so, and values will come down somewhat as they always do year to year...

Wait? I wouldnt if the right car comes along. You're looking for a hard to find car, if you see what you want snap it up.

From CarGurus. This shows an analogous transition from W221 to W222. I can't see where the W222 introduction had much of an impact on W221 prices, for a vehicle three years old than the new platform introduction. Chart data from September 2010 to present, and the introduction of W222 in 2014.

It's a different world now due to Covid. Forget about everything above. Just find a car with most of your options, be flexible somewhat and enjoy it. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Should you wait for ... this or that? No. Just get a car and enjoy it. You could wait for this deal or that rate or whatever. You may be waiting... forever for all the stars to align. When you find the car that best suits your needs, just buy the darn thing. Not too many cars out there like the one you're looking for. You will love the 2018+ car. I sure do. Good luck. Act fast. Don't stress or dawdle. Snooze, you lose these days. Nice cars are selling in a couple days.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
I got really lucky with my 2018 S560 last fall, $156K sticker car and I payed a little over half that, pretty much every option. They had just taken the car in trade a few days before I bought it and had just come out of prep after being certified. If I had not got to the dealer that day it probably would have been sold over the weekend, not many cars like mine out there. You just keep having to do a nationwide search every day and when it comes up jump on it.

Too many german broads
How many miles were on your 15? I considered doing this, but feared not being able to find a facelift with the correct options like my current 15 s550, sticker is also up there. Decided to hold on to it, better than taking the serious hit in value. A lot of these S560s don't even have HUD, guess it will just take time finding the right one. Good luck to you on finding a well equipped S560 !

This 100%. Buying car like this should be a fun and exciting experience. Don't get bogged down with over analyzing.

The good thing is my job became 100% remote due to COVID-19, they're downsizing our footprint at HQ and I was one of the guys who was asked to stay home permanently. So at least not having a car for weeks or months is a nonissue. The wife and I will share the W212 until I find the next S...

I'm in the Northeast and the overwhelming majority of CPO S560s had premium package, driver assistance, and often warmth and comfort. AND THAT'S IT. (well, some had the "sport" package, but that was not a factor for me) Took me a while to find one that also had exclusive Nappa leather, Designo trim, HUD, rear seat packages etc. And I am still missing 3D sound and Night Vision. The super loaded cars are just so darn rare.

The above chart would apply to the equivalent of a 2017. The chart below show depreciation rates for later models.

Thanks @MBNUT1 . What insights does the chart provide?

Chassis, I think the insight it provides is that, no matter the original selling price, after 10 years the selling prices become close to the same.

It is a function of your ownership time horizon. If you are keeping the car forever it doesn't matter. In the short term if you paid $85K for a used one the depreciation slope increases after the new model comes out.

Not necessarily right now in this market where used car prices are actually going up (thanks COVID) and the W223 is receiving less than positive reviews from MB owners.

My experience was it was really hard to find the color and options combination I wanted. High-spec "loaded" cars carried a larger premium than I wanted to pay, so I kept looking and looking until I finally found the combination I thought was the best value, and bought it.

Well its been 2 months since I was here last and I'm pleased to say that I found a low mileage (12,300), 143k MSRP, 2018 S560 4-matic with all the options I wanted! KBB says 80-85k and my sale price was 79.9k. I checked DAILY for the last 60 or so days and it finally popped yesterday, I've talked to at least 30 dealers in that time frame and have looked at least 300-400 W222's. Deposit is down, 3rd party inspection is tomorrow. If all goes well, I should have it within a week or so (shipping it from GA to RI). Fingers crossed!

Great that’s not easy to find a more loaded one. Does it’s have the 3D audio? That’s my favorite option on mine. Mine was a 155k sticker 2018 s560 Sedan. It’s got the magic body control and hud and night vision. I’m in RI too near Newport Aquidneck island. The car has worked out great other than a fuel stink the first four months that turned out to be a simple hose clamp near the right fuel rail on the low pressure line where the rubber line meets the metal line. It was dripping. Took 4 trips to the dealer with loaners each time to figure that one out. The car is very comfortable and the trans in general is fairly smooth. Some people complain of really rough downshifts.

Congrats on the find!

I have also been debating upgrading my 2015 S550 and getting a 2019 or 2020 or waiting for the W223.

The used market is slim right now.

What was your primary search vehicle? Cars.com or the like?
