On the hunt: 15-16 S65 AMG Sedan

I am currently searching for a 2015-2016 S65 Sedan. I have a 2014 S550 4-Matic which has been a wonderful car.

I want to hear from S65 owners what weakness the S65 might have when compared to the S550.

I own a 2015 S65. Weaknesses compared to an S550 4-matic? Not as capable in snow, it uses about 20% more fuel, it is impossible not to grin when driving it. Note the S65 does not use "run-flat" tires.

No snow here in Texas, so I should be in good shape. 20% extra is gas is ok too. Gas is cheaper in Texas.

Sounds like I just need to find my car now.

Might I offer a different perspective. How about keep your S like I did and get an AMG GTC or GTR. I promise if you think the S65 will put a smile on your face then the GT will do it in five fold. This is the scenario that I did. Brought the Maybach and the GTC. Ended up selling the Maybach and keeping the GTC.

Really the only weaknesses come from the much higher cost of repairs when something goes wrong. That V12 is decadent, but can blow up your bank account if it runs into problems, especially when it comes to turbo and motor seals....which can entail expensive motor teardowns to get to. Other very expensive potential repairs would be with the ABC/Magic Body Control pump & high pressure lines and the 7 speed trans which may not have the long term stamina to handle the twist from that V12. And motor and trans mounts are known to fail prematurely in them. The only way you can get a warranty on one is if you buy it CPO. That should be very telling about the cost of repairs on them.

Also, you'll go through a lot more tires on that car and the cost of new brakes will easily run you $3k+ each time. But if you can stomach potentially $5-10k+ annually in repairs in maintenance, then I think you will absolutely love that car. They come loaded with pretty much every option MB offers as standard equipment.

I have owned an S65 continuously since 2006 when I bought the W220 version. In 150k miles I never had an engine or transmission issue. The 2006 had a lot of maintenance costs for motor mounts, coil packs and ABC hoses. The 2015 has had zero costs for these items. The coil packs no longer exist and the mounts and ABC parts must be improved because there has been no repairs needed.
Similar to Katie's comments, I use the S65 for trips and when i need space for more than one passenger. My daily fun driver is an SL65. Got to have both.

Great idea, but I already have my fun cars: Lexus LC500 and a Lambo Gallardo SL. They keep my need for speed alive just fine. I just need a daily driver for the next 12 months or so. I will buy a W223 when they start to have some prime used models.

Thanks. I have a dealer willing to do a CPO on the car I choose. That will help with the warranty concerns.

So when I sold my 16 Maybach it had 76000 miles on it. I realize it is NOT a S65 however it has a lot of the AMG parts on it. The car ate up rear tires and I have written about that, I ended up adding adjustable camber robs on the back and solved that problem.

I had to replace the ABC pump around 60,000 miles which I found strange. It cost me about 3000 dollars total. Outside of that I had to replace one front wheel hub bearing, two idler pulleys, and a air conditioner line going to the compressor.

2015 S550
You can save around $20k by opting for an S63 instead of an S65. The S63 is actually a faster car and you can get them as loaded as the 65. They are also 4matic, which aids in handling and tire wear.

Don't disagree, but there is something with a V12 that makes the heart beat.

A Rennntech tune will help match a S65 and a S63 very nicely.

If it was a tune for tune for the S65 and S63, the S63 will be allot faster than the S65. The money AND gas you save from the S63 vs S65, get a full after exhaust with downpipes and it will sound even better than a S65.

Since you're set on the S65, I think you are doing the right thing. It doesn't matter that the S63 is faster, doesn't matter that it's cheaper. An S65 is an S65. You gotta have the best, this is it. GO FOR IT! I'd love one too. I want a car that tells the world, "yeah, this is an S65 12 cylinder... Just sayin."

It's HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO IT MAN!
