I dont have a 4matic and cant tell you about that fluid. I have a 2016 S550 2wd and the rear diff fluid is super easy. Just get the MB spec fluid, there is a fill and drain, no crush washers or seals. I did it at 30K and fluid was like new for reference.

Small tip on diff fluid change ... take the fill plug out first, then the drain plug. If the fill plug is seized for some reason and won't come out you'll be glad you didn't drain all the lube first!

@604benz have you reviewed the former bevo site, now the operating fluids site? Google will find it. It has the info you are looking for.

Front Diff

I’ve changed my rear diff fluid today with no problems. Got to the front and couldn’t find the fill or drain plugs on the front diff. I took the cover off, I see the stirring rack, oil pan and all but no idea on the two plugs. Anyone have a diagram of the front diff?

Drain plug is at the bottom. The fill is via a halfshaft (axle shaft) opening, therefore a halfshaft needs to be removed. There is no fill plug.

Have a look at WIS instructions for W212 and W221:

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...fluid-how.html

Also look at ebay photos of W222 front axle carrier, it's the same principle as W212 and W221.

Thanks alot yes noticed the drain and half shaft removal makes sense to fill. Very little room underneath in the front end. So just knocked out the rear diff.

Mercedes sells an adapter for filling that can be used for filling the diffs.
For the front diff there is no fill, only drain.
use this adapter to refill the front diff then use finger method to hold fluid while you get the plug back on.
if your doing the trans, you are doing yourself a disservice by not also draining the torque converter. That holds about 3-4l.
almost half the fluid in the system.
