I hit a curb while parking and broke the front bumper lip. The body shop gave me a $3000 estimate and I am wondering if there is a way to reduce that number. I read on these forums that folks sometimes order the part themselves to reduce cost and/or put it on at home as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed here outside of shopping around with multiple body shops?
How do I get to know the part number and where do I order it from?
I have attached a photo of the broken lip and the estimate I have gotten. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much in advance
2023 GLE450, 2021 E350 / Used to drive: 2019 E300, 2021 + 2020 GLE350, 2019 E450 Wagon(s), 2017 E300
Painful estimate for sure - I had a similar issue with one of my wagons - was about the same amount. You may find someone to try and repair the lower lip, but not sure it would come out great and how much less would it be? (the damaged part is part of the overall bumper cover and not a separate part...) If you are keeping the car for a while, would be worth doing, it not, would live with it until I traded it or sold it.
That is a very high estimate for that repair. I believe most shops could complete it in the $1500-2000 range.
I personally would just have a local “touch-up” company work their magic there which would probably be in the $500 range. That low and isolated section could look great with a sectional repaint.
It looks like you received a typical "S class" quote. Like when you live in a certain area, driving certain cars changes the quote accordingly. I would say they skipped the private party estimate and gave you the full boat insurance estimate basically saying "he/she is driving an S class". Considering how easy it is to pull off bumper covers it's an awful lot of labor...

I have a local repair guy that will fix my problems like this (on the side). I pay him cash so that it's not reported on CarFax. I swear you'll never notice anything ever happened. I plan on keeping my car quite a bit longer so I don't accept quotes like you got. Broken windshields are the only exception.
Any bodyshop will repair this for $500-$800 if you ask them to repair, not replace the whole bumper. This includes Mercedes body shops. Easy fix...
I just left my E450 coupe at my local bodyshop. Was told it would only be $350 to repair it as if nothing happened. I should get it back in 5 days or less. Will report back on the results. $3000 is ridiculous.
That's too much given the extent of the damage. I must say when I saw the title I expected to see a bumper shattered in pieces which gave me some creepy feeling . Glad, to see it was not that serious .It ,must be repairable
That quote seems completely wrong.
From your picture you need only the deflector, they are quoting paint and grill.
The part you broke is about $300 IIRC.
if it's at the Mercedes Collision shop, $3000 is a bargain
I was quoted $3600 CAD for this at the MB Collision shop for only a bumper repaint, lower diffuser replacement (the part was only listed as $800 or 900), and reflector replacement with 16 hours of total labour on this old W164

When I have had small scrapes like that I have a guy come to my house or office and he fixes those with air brush painting. Usually costs $150-300 for something like that. Good luck!

Yeah I have my own trusted shop I go to when I need to do body repairs at my own cost but this was a claim on a vehicle where I don't care about how marred the Carfax will get since I won't ever get rid of the vehicle. I'd rather just go to a place that gives me the best loaner options and don't feel bad for the insurance company since I'm in a place with a monopoly.
Also surprised by the lack of damage on the vehicle since the X3 who rear ended me had significantly more damage on the bumper and also broke a headlight

I had more or less the same amount of damage you have and my dealership charged me US$ 589.00 to fix it and it came out perfect. They also offered to cover the front plate holder holes at no charge but I declined that. Anyways, I had the same dilema as you and replacing the parts at that cost just didn't make any sense to me.
I was rear-ended and the other driver caused a minor scratch similar to yours. One shop quoted $900 total to remove, repair, repaint, and reinstall the bumper. However, I took it to a Mercedes certified repair facility that did the job for $4K. As was explained to me, Mercedes recommends against repainting a bumper because that places additional layers of paint and clear coat on the surface. The thickness of the bumper with paint and clear has to within narrow tolerances for the radar and other sensors behind the bumper to function correctly. Therefore, the bumper had to be replaced along with some of the components that weren't damaged, but would be if disassembled from the factory bumper. Additionally, there were no OEM grade aftermarket replacement options available, so they used all Mercedes original parts - I have a S550 with the AMG Sport package.

bumper is only being repainted in my case; should I push for a bumper replacement?
The description of radar behind the bumper is not correct.
Bumper repaint is acceptable repair procedure, use of filler is not MB approved though.
