Help figuring out what I’m actually paying extra due to market

I’m close to pulling the trigger on a CPO 2019 S560 with a sticker price of 122,200 being offered for 86,900 with 17,500 miles. I know I’m paying more for this car due to pandemic and being CPO, but I’m trying to figure out on this model year how much more I’m paying at moment? I’m not sure if one would consider this car 2 or 3 years old with the 2022 just coming out….

Probably about 10K high. Depends somewhat on condition. 3-4 years ago it would have been half of MSRP, that's probably not coming back for several years so if you need a car now, just buy what you want and can afford. If you are trading in you actually do better as used cars are worth a lot more now.

I agree with about $10k higher than it would be at the end of this year. I also agree that the prices we had before (1/2 of MSRP for a 3 year old car) aren’t going to be around for awhile.

That’s what I was questioning if I should consider this car 2yrs old or 3yrs. Agreed if 3 then yes should be close to half off sticker in a normal market. I can swallow paying additional 10k at moment, just not 25k! I don’t see anything changing for at least 18 months minimum.

Ya 10K more is not bad in this market, if you want the car you really don't have a choice.

Get the 2019. The loss on the W223 will be much higher than the $10K. In the $80K range is very much normal in today's climate. I wouldn't hesitate at all.

Hi.

I'm in the same boat buying 2020 S450 CPO with about 25K miles for $75K. I also think it's a little overpriced, but on the other hand I'm trading in my 2020 BMW 740i for $60K, which I bought 10 months ago for $55K.
So after all not a bad deal

Why are you trading in so soon?

I know this thread is old but figured I’d post some color since I’m doing the same at the moment.

I purchased a 2018 Range Rover Supercharged about a year ago and am going back to an S class. I love the way the rover drives and mine has every little thing available and the interior is comparable in quality - however the technology sort of stinks. It looks nice but the reaction time on the touch screen is really slow and the CarPlay reliability is spotty. I’ve had the software updated I can’t tell you how many times and they also replaced a number of the computer system communication modules. My warranty is getting close to being out and I just don’t want to own that technology and the expenses long term.

I wish Mercedes had an s class quality suv but the gle and gls are just not quite as nice as they should be in my opinion so I’m going back to a car.

So what is interesting is that my Rover is worth more in relative terms than the S560s. Sticker price is similar as my Rover was spec’d highly but the S560s I’m looking at are around 5-10k more in original MSRP. So I find it odd that I am moving to a year newer in a 2019 CPO S560 and will be receiving cash from the dealer. It’s not as if CPO cars are priced under market and the dealers are in this business to make money so they will be selling my rover for more of course than they give me for it. The S Class should be significantly more reliable too so the whole thing is strange to me - except I guess people just don’t like big sedans as much as they like SUVs.

have you not driven a GLS63 or GLS580? The 63 interior is top notch

Any car can have a nice interior until you experience something even nicer.

The $86000 is actually a good price considering the mileage. Mine has 26000 on it and I saw one like it at a dealership for $80K. My lease ends in December of this year (2022), and it has a residual of $58K. I most certainly will convert it to a buy at that time because it is just such a great car and in no way could I find a car as smooth as this one is for that price at the end of the lease.

Go for it. These are the strangest of times. If you like something, it will probably be gone in a day or 2. You see something, you buy it. It's like houses right now... bidding wars. Life is short not to get what you want right now if you can afford it. Best wishes.

I paid right at 50% for CPO 2016 S550e (tough find) so I think in this day you will probably have to pay that premium. From what I hear from car dealers this will not change for at least 18 months, so you may give up more if you are a guy that likes to get a new ride every 2-3 years. If your horizon is more like 10 years than who cares you may as well take this one.

Well, I just bought a 2015 S550 with 65k miles for 35% of original sticker (not CPO, but from a MB dealer), so perhaps the advent of $7 gas and stock market volatility are making dealers a bit more flexible?

Was at local MB dealer and they had 2 2019 G63 wagons on the floor. Both 80k over new MSRP. Not sure who is paying this for a brick that gets really bad gas mileage.

Exactly why I bought the S550e, my last car was an Infiniti Q45 and I didn't want another car that took 20+ gallons of gas and got V8 gas mileage. I don't think there is any let-up on a CPO with less than 40k miles.

I was helping a friend to shop for a new 2022 Nissan Pathfinder and Nissan dealers are marking up the "Platinum" version of this over 15k and will not budge, MSRP is around $43k and they want 60k. Honda and Toyota stick an extra 5k on cars too. Used car market for cars that still have warranty are going to be expensive for at least another year.

A CPO'd (while still under factory warranty) 2018 MB 560 - with 45K Miles currently at 51% of MSRP (seems to be best deal I've seen) - that seems more in line what they used to sell for pre-pandemic.

Most clean cars I've seen selling, are more in line with 60-70% of MSRP currently.

Thoughts?
