Thoughts on an S600?

Thoughts on an S600?
I am considering a 2015 S600 with under 60K miles. This car is extremely clean and well maintained with no expense spared in maintenance. Question: Given that I drive 2-3K miles annually, do you folks think an extended warranty is justified?
Thanks in advance!

Rare beasts. I flirted with a couple of S600s when I was shopping and the sellers wouldn't negotiate at all, not one penny. This car is a beauty and you get the rare 3D sound, rear seat entertainment and A/C, splitview, HUD, and lots of other features (https://www.lastvin.com/vin/vJ8m3d37bjndX7e0W)
All that said, a 2015 S with 60K miles is now a $40k car, so you are paying a lot to have the V12 version.
You asked about extended warranty and that's really an individual choice based on your risk tolerance. Some people on here say they saved a fortune on repairs with an extended warranty and others say they never needed it and glad they didn't buy it.

It is up to you since you plan on driving so little, but I'm not sure about your expected depreciation, it has some age and some miles, I'd say a lot of the depreciation already priced in.

I'm in awe at how much you drive... I drive 1-2k miles a month! As for warranty, it depends how long you plan to keep the car. In your case, with how little miles you drive, I wouldn't go for it. The main maintenance cost with the M279 (V12) is the coil packs which typically need to be replaced around the 80k mark. As for the suspension, MBC seems to be pretty good from a reliability standpoint and fairly inexpensive to replace worst comes to worst. (In comparison to the prior ABC suspension). A regular S600 (non maybach) is very rare to come by so if you are set on the V12, I'd make the jump quickly! Best of luck.

Totally off topic - has anyone here ever considered or owned a Volvo XC90 excellence? Those were sold in the US only in 2017 and are limo like. I am also considering these as well although reliability is not strong in these as far as I can tell

Didn't even know they existed before this post. Pretty interested and rare for Volvo to make an SUV like that. I can't understand how they justified the $100k price new, but clearly they are in line with other luxury cars when it comes to depreciation! My BIL had the same generation XC90 and while it was a very nice SUV, it had many minor but annoying problems (e.g. front touchscreen not working / freezing).

Yeah... I would stray away from a car with a turboed & supercharged 4 cylinder along with an electric motor & batteries 😂 I bought a T5 S90 as a new daily since it gets 25 mpg in the city. I wanted an inscription but it’s extremely rare for T5 models. Also, sorry for hijacking your post... (:

I have purchased six MB V12's and currently own three. I have driven these MB V12's over 400,000 total miles so I have some personal experience. The models prior to 2008 or 2009 (depends on which model) were high cost to keep in like new condition. The three high cost items were coil packs, motor mounts and the ABC system. From 2009 on, the ABC and the motor mounts were improved to lessen the frequency of repairs. Beginning with the W222 and R231 models the coil packs were eliminated so that is no longer a repair item. The ABC and, on the W222 the MBC systems were improved again and so far on my 2015 S65 and 2017 SL65 there have been no repairs necessary other than battery replacements and new brake pads. On the 2009 SL600, the motor mounts were replaced right at the end of the seven year factory warranty. The mounts had not collapsed but the dealer did me a major favor and pushed new mounts through the warranty system. The only expensive repair on the 2009 was the usual R230 trunk latch failure. Have never had to touch the ABC system in 13 years.
Based on my experience, if the 2015 S600 is fully maintained and not abused you should be relatively safe buying it. Were it me I would pass on $10k for an aftermarket warranty but that is a highly personal decision. I enjoy driving the S65 (and the SL65) so much I do not care about depreciation, its irrelevant if you want a V12. One recommendation is to replace the S600's run flat tires with non run flats in the S65 sizes. You can tell the difference in the ride quality.

The coil packs are gone. The plugs have individual coils that are easy and inexpensive to replace. They are not a normal service item and the dealer Service manager confirmed it is very rare for one to fail. I cannot speak to the reliability if an aggressive tune is installed with colder plugs and other performance mods.

I wouldn't avoid the S600. They are awesome cars. Just make sure you get every single maintenance record and go for it. Get the warranty and drive it confidently. I miss my W221 V12. After the 3 year depreciation, they are incredible buys.

There are no more new V12 AMG's so I think the idea of purchasing a new one is moot. Does MB still make V12 Maybach's? I thought they are all V8's now. The car currently in our garage that has had, by far, the highest maintenance costs over the last three years (warranty plus out of pocket) has been the W213 E63S. Its costs over three years have been more than the total of the 2009 S600, 2015 S65 and 2017 SL65 costs. Even with those costs the all time winner for highest repair cost during our ownership is not the 2006 S65 (it was second), it was our 2007 E63 with the 6.2L "flawed" V8 (defective head bolts).

Never buy a new one unless you make $1M + a year and have nothing financial to worry about.

A guy told me that buying a V12 was like buying two cars assuming everything almost doubled over 6 cylinder cars . I would not buy an S Class not just V12 without warranty

I’ve owned and still own many 600’s and they aren’t problematic at all. As long as you know their service history your golden. Since the engine came out in 2003 these are built proof. The suspension upgrades done in 2007 up have made them very reliable. The best thing you can do is to change the filter in the fluid reservoir for the suspension. These cars can be much less problematic than the air matic versions. You will love it!!!! If you want an extended warranty, you can find exclusionary policy’s with an extended 7 year or 125k which ever comes first for around 4-4.5k. I’ve always bought one after the warranty runs out but for me it’s been a waste of money as like you I only drive 2-3k miles a year and have never needed to have a repair done, even under the factory warranty. Show us pics of you get it. They are spectacular, much more special than the 500/550 variants.

This discussion beings me to another topic: Values of ICE cars in general down the road, perhaps in 5-10 years. While I still see a strong market for specialty cars on BAT (currently a 2010 S600 with 17k miles is at 45K with 3 days to go), who really knows when will the tipping point arrive when people basically give up on them? I am 54, and noticed that younger people today look at cars as an appliance if they even want one. For me, a car is much more than an appliance but people like us are perhaps now a minority?

I consider my 2015 S-600 one of the bets cars that has ever passed though my possession.
Smooth, quiet, powerful, fully equipped; beautiful to behold, comfortable to drive.
I even average 20 MPG overall: 24-26 highway cruising, not so much in town.

Plenty of comments above.
You will LOVE the ABC with computer vision control. It's fabulous in my 2015 S550, like magic! However, only works in the daytime.
Very rare option.

great to know. Has it been reliable for you and how many miles to you currently have?

Reliability: I have a minor issue in cold weather where I have to press the Green button in the trunk for it to close and latch.
Reliability: on rougher roads there is a tiny rattle in the dash that goes away when you push on it, or lower air pressure to 32 PSI.
Reliability: I have had to change the auxiliary battery twice while still on original main battery.
I don't think these has anything to do with the motor or options that come when getting the motor.
