Cup Holder Lid Sticking Open, Center Console

I’ve been having an issue with the center console cup holder lid sticking open and or closing very slowly or not quite all the way, worse when cold outside. A few trips to the dealer has not solved the issue, and actually made it worse sometimes. Any suggestions for access to the return mechanism inside the console under the horseshoe switch bank? I’ve seen a couple YouTube vids showing part of what I need for access through the main console compartment to get to screws holding the touch pad, but my car has 4 zone so it’s a little different. Thanks!

I've never been able to close mine at all ... same issue. People have posted on here saying to massage it until it frees up, or something like that ...

Ooh that’s not good either!

Does anyone have the exploded view or MBZ training video to disassemble this? I found they have one for door panels but haven’t found one for this yet.

Had the same problem with my 2015 S550. When it's open, and you want it to close, I found is that if you do the following: 1. push down further on the lip of the door (open it more), 2. reach in with your fingernail about 1/4 of the length of the open door edge (from the driver side), 3, hook your nail on the little lip there, and pull it toward closing.
Mine then closes on its own, perfectly. I could probably try something like WD-40 to improve it, but I have been overly lazy thus far.
Happens every time that I open it. Got in the habit, when I put her to bed for the night. Cupholder, rear window sunshade, front window covering, lock her up.
Keep her outside. That's it!
Hope that helped.

I encountered this same issue! Most of the time I leave the lid open because I place my phone there. However one day while detailing the interior, I realized that the lid had become stuck and was slow moving once freed. I resolved the issue by opening the lid and applying the Mercedes sunroof grease (clear, odorless, and long lasting) to the tracks. The I opened and closed the lid a few times and it was instantly back to normal operation. Now I make a mental note to grease that track each year when I grease the sunroof's tracks.

BTW, my interior is immaculate and I never eat or drink in the car. I could understand this happening if the track was exposed to spills from coffee or sodas, but I'm obsessed with keeping my interior clean. So based on my experience and the comments from others, I'm guessing the factory lubricant just dries up over time and becomes sticky.

I quick spray of appliance oil on the hinge mechanism will do the trick.

George A - that’s exactly what I do to mine to open and close. Generally it’s open because I’ll put my phone or bottled water in there, but knowing it sticks makes me crazy. I tried WD40 without success. I’ll try MB sunroof grease (anyone have a part number or is there a recommendation if not MB grease?). I have designo piano black - easily scratched but beautiful… a bit crazy that the trim upgrade, while expensive, is also dysfunctional! Dealer says not covered under CPO because it is “trim”. Another poster was successful because they classified the spring mechanism as “mechanical failure” vs trim which is cosmetic.

I want to keep it close and place my phone in the door pockets .Because the more you use it the sooner it gets worn out and hence you may face some problems with it
